Here’s a quick glimpse at one of many impressive outcomes HPU graduates achieve.
Name: Ashley Smith, Class of 2027
Hometown: Arnold, Maryland
Major: Advertising, Public Relations and Strategic Communication; minoring in Marketing and Journalism
Internship plans: Ashley was a marketing intern for Gable this summer in Baltimore, Maryland. As a marketing intern, she wrote five case studies for previous projects the company has done. In addition, she gathered information by conducting interviews with team members. Throughout these case studies, she has covered the design, manufacturing and installation process of signage, as well as the communication process and relationship between the company and the client. Once the draft has been submitted, they go through a review process to then be posted on the company’s website.
How HPU helped you get there: “Although I have only completed one year at High Point, my confidence and communication skills have grown tremendously. The classes that I have taken have helped me during my writing and interview process. The Career and Professional Development Office helped prepare me for my initial interview to land me the internship.”
Most impactful mentor at HPU: “My most impactful mentor at HPU is Nathan Hedman, Honors Scholar Director. He has played a very influential role in my overall academic success so far. Dr. Hedman encourages me to challenge my thought process and prioritizes valuing students as individuals apart from just grades. Another impactful mentor of mine is Jim Scott, Associate Professor of the Practice of Sports Media. Professor Scott taught my Human Communication class during my first semester at HPU when I was undeclared at the time. Throughout his course, I fell in love with the various aspects of communications, pushing me to declare my major. In my second semester, I declared my major and enrolled in another one of his classes. Professor Scott instilled confidence in me that I could accomplish anything I set my mind to.”
How you used Career & Professional Development: “I used the Office of Career and Professional Development to help me figure out what career path I wanted to go into. I came to High Point undecided and met with a career advisor to go over possible majors and paths I could take with each of my interests shown by the Pathway U exam. From there I registered for classes that would cover each of these interests and solidified a path for myself during these courses. It was very helpful for me to talk this through with someone and figure out my path in one semester.”
What has your internship experience been like and how is it preparing you for your future? “My internship experience has taught me a lot about professional development and working in an office environment. It has prepared me for the future by challenging me to communicate effectively with key contributors to the company, ultimately strengthening my interview and overall communication skills.“
What are the values and virtues HPU’s campus helped you develop that you’ll take with you after graduation? “A value I will take away from HPU is never missing an opportunity to network. I am constantly applying for various positions to grow my skill set, as well as making connections. After my first year at HPU, I have realized the importance of getting your name out there and putting your best foot forward in every way possible.”
Advice for underclassmen: “Take advantage of every opportunity. Get involved in as much as possible and figure out from there what you enjoy most. Don’t put so much pressure on yourself to have a set path right now, it will come with time, but make an effort to put yourself out there. Everyone else is figuring out their path right alongside you.”
