Name: James Clay McNiff, Class of 2024

Hometown: Rocky Mount, North Carolina

Major: Political Science; minor in Sales

Post-graduation plans: James is heading to Boca Raton, Florida to begin his career as a physician consultant for MPLT Healthcare. His position as a physician consultant entails prospecting radiologists to provide physicians for facilities in need of short-term coverage. The most interesting aspects of this position include speaking with highly qualified doctors every day and getting to provide medical coverage to an area that would otherwise lack it.

How HPU helped you get there: “If it were not for HPU, I would not have my job as a physician consultant. The opportunities provided through the Professional Sales Club allowed me to travel to the Intercollegiate Sales Competition in Orlando, Florida, where I met my employer. The school gave me unique opportunities I would not have found elsewhere.”

Most impactful mentor at HPU: “Larry Quinn — Director of the Professional Selling Program and Chair of the Department of Sales, is my most impactful mentor at HPU. He saw the potential in me to be a great salesperson and helped guide me towards where I am today.”

Most impactful moment at HPU: “My most impactful moment was finding out that I had made the team to go to the National Shore Sales Competition in Maryland. It was the first opportunity I had gotten in sales after adding a minor in it in junior year and it helped me gain valuable insight into how to land a job.”

How has HPU’s inspiring environment contributed to your success? The people I met along the way were constantly uplifting and the connections I gained at HPU helped me land a great job.”

What are the life skills HPU helped you develop that prepared you for long-term success? The ability to put myself in uncomfortable situations and to have a growth mindset.”

Advice for underclassmen: “Be persistent and unafraid of failure. You only put yourself in situations where you can be successful by doing things that you haven’t done before.”
