Name: Jason Hinkle, Class of 2024

Hometown: Martinsville, New Jersey

Major: Exercise Science; minor in Business Administration

Post-graduation plans: Jason is heading to Duke University in Durham, North Carolina to pursue his Doctorate of Physical Therapy.

How HPU helped you get there: “HPU had incredible resources available for mentorship, research and networking that paved the way for my future academic and professional endeavors. The Biomechanics Lab was an extraordinary opportunity to conduct research alongside professionals in the field and interact with DI athletes to collect data. HPU allowed me to publish papers and present research across the country, opening up doors to network with professionals from all over the world. My mentors at HPU set me up for success in my graduate school search and application process, and I am incredibly grateful for their investments in me.”

Most impactful mentor at HPU: “My most impactful mentor at HPU was Dr. Roger Vaughan, Associate Professor of Exercise Science. He instilled in me a work ethic that has led to great success, research and professional skills that led to multiple publications in undergrad and was always there to support and encourage me throughout academia, internships, scholarships and graduate school applications. Thank you, Dr. Vaughan, for your investments in me, and I am confident you are continuing to do the same with current HPU students. Your impact on my life has not gone unnoticed, and I am grateful for your time and intentionality with me. Thank you also to all the wonderful faculty who shaped me into the man I am today!”

Most impactful moment at HPU: “President Nido Qubein’s freshman seminar was my most impactful moment at HPU. His emphasis on the importance of gratitude in every situation was paramount in my development as a first-year college student. There is oxygen in the air that we breathe, that is something to be thankful for! It is so easy to focus on the negatives in life and the struggles we face, but the joy in life can be found when we realize how good, merciful and loving our God is, and how every moment of our existence is only because of Him. Colossians 1:17”

How has HPU’s inspiring environment contributed to your success? “HPU has cultivated a culture that prioritizes network building and connections in the professional setting from day one of college. This culture that values seeking educational experiences and internships contributed to my pursuit of internships at school with SuRF, an internship with Twin Boro Physical Therapy, volunteer experience with Moses Cone Health in Greensboro, and many more.”

What are the life skills HPU helped you develop that prepared you for long-term success? “I thought I had good life skills before coming to HPU, but throughout my four years at this school, my communication, leadership and time management skills grew immensely. Through club and sports leadership, email correspondence, countless meetings and campus ministry, HPU cultivated a pristine environment for me to develop these skills that have prepared me for success in the real world. I have already reaped the benefits of growing in these skills only a few months post-graduation, and I can only imagine where they will take me in the future. “

What are the values and virtues HPU’s campus helped you develop that you’ll take with you after graduation? “God, family and country are three values and virtues of HPU I will take with me wherever I go after graduation, whether that’s graduate school or beyond. Respect is essential to success in life. Respecting the God who created us and all that we experience, respecting our families, veterans, professors and peers as we navigate life, and respecting our country and the freedoms it provides us.”

Advice for underclassmen: “Take advantage of the opportunities High Point is handing to you. Do not take these for granted. There is so much at your fingertips, you only need to take hold of it. Find opportunities to network with professionals through volunteering, shadowing, or interning. Find a faculty mentor who can guide and encourage you in your academic and professional endeavors. Lastly, lean on your in-person social network that you are constantly building. This will provide you with countless more opportunities than applying to hundreds of job listings online.”
