HIGH POINT, N.C., Feb. 28, 2025 – High Point University raised a record $285,000 for United Way of Greater High Point during its 2024 campaign and recently presented the gift to UWGHP leaders. This brings HPU’s total donations to community revitalization efforts and nonprofit organizations during the first two months of 2025 to more than $1.1 million.
HPU President Nido Qubein presented a check for $285,000 to United Way of Greater High Point during the final game of the regular season for the HPU men’s basketball team on Feb. 26. United Way of Greater High Point Campaign Chair Adam Hoover and Joe Barnes, the nonprofit organization’s vice president of resource development, joined Qubein on the court for the special presentation in the Nido and Mariana Qubein Arena and Conference Center.
HPU’s gift surpasses last year’s donation of $281,000 to United Way of Greater High Point and marks an increase of 918% to the local nonprofit since 2005.
“As an anchor institution in High Point, High Point University is committed to supporting the United Way,” Qubein said. “I am proud that the HPU family always comes together to stand tall with our city and support the United Way and their partner agencies. Together, we are building a stronger community.”
This is the fourth six-figure donation that HPU has given so far this year, bringing its total gifts to more than $1.1 million in 2025 and more than $50 million over the last decade.
“We are profoundly grateful for HPU’s continued commitment to the High Point community,” said Jane Liebscher, president of United Way of Greater High Point. “Their $285,000 contribution to United Way of Greater High Point represents more than just a donation — it’s a powerful investment in the well-being of our neighbors. This generosity allows us to fund critical programs that provide food security, safe housing, early childhood education, health care access and so much more. Every dollar raised goes directly toward addressing the most pressing needs in our community, ensuring that individuals and families receive the support they need to thrive. HPU’s unwavering partnership exemplifies what it means to be a community champion, and we couldn’t be more appreciative of their dedication to making a lasting impact.”

During the game, Qubein also presented an HPU game ball to High Point Mayor Cyril Jefferson and two local officials to commemorate HPU’s recent donation of $250,000 to support minority entrepreneurs and develop the Washington Street Historic District in the city of High Point.
HPU’s donation to United Way of Greater High Point comes only three weeks after Qubein announced that HPU is giving $500,000 to the High Point Community Foundation to help provide quality, affordable housing for families in the city of High Point.
On Jan. 8, Qubein presented a $100,000 donation to Rev. Franklin Graham, president and CEO of Samaritan’s Purse and the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, during his visit to campus. The donation will help Samaritan’s Purse provide additional support to people who have been impacted by Hurricane Helene in western North Carolina and the wildfires raging across Los Angeles, California.
In addition to the donations, HPU students, faculty and staff contribute 500,000 volunteer hours each year. Those hours translate into an impact of $15 million in the community, according to the United Way’s calculations.
