How HPU helped you get there: “HPU has helped me grow in so many remarkable ways since my freshman year. When I first arrived, I was a shy, introverted student with a very narrow perspective on what I was capable of achieving. I was unsure of my abilities and often held myself back from pursuing my true passions. However, it didn’t take long for me to find a supportive and motivating community at HPU — one that included inspiring professors and peers who encouraged me to push past my limitations and set ambitious goals. For a long time, I had dreamed of becoming an architect, but I struggled with self-doubt. I often felt like I wasn’t “smart enough” to pursue this career, and the fear of failure held me back from fully committing to the idea. I questioned whether I could handle the challenges and intensity of the field. But as I became more immersed in the HPU community, I began to realize that I had the potential to achieve my goals, despite my insecurities. The professors at HPU played a crucial role in changing my mindset. They not only helped me build technical skills and knowledge in design but also instilled in me the confidence to believe in my own potential.”
Most impactful mentor at HPU: “One of the most influential mentors I’ve had during my time at High Point University is Brandon Jones, Instructor of Home Furnishings and Interior Design. From the very first day of my freshman year, Mr. Jones has been a constant source of knowledge, guidance and motivation, helping shape both my academic and personal growth. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of sharing many remarkable experiences with him. This past May, I had the opportunity to explore Osaka, Japan, alongside Mr. Jones, an experience that was both culturally enriching and professionally inspiring. Additionally, I’ve had the honor of serving as his Student Instructor Assistant for a freshman studio course, where I’ve been able to support new students while further developing my own leadership and teaching skills. His mentorship has not only deepened my understanding of the field but also encouraged me to continuously push my limits, pursue new challenges and embrace opportunities for growth.”
Most impactful moment at HPU: “One of the most impactful experiences I’ve had at HPU has been my time in the Student Government Association. This year, I’ve had the privilege of serving as the Class of 2025’s Events Coordinator, working alongside our incredible President, Emma Higgins, who has graciously entrusted me with this role. SGA truly exemplifies how much this institution values its students. Planning large-scale events that honor traditions and celebrate our class has been deeply meaningful to me. I’m incredibly grateful to Emma, our dedicated team, and the Class of 2025 for the opportunity to serve and contribute to our shared experiences. It has truly been an honor. I look forward to ending the year on a high note!”
How you used Career & Professional Development: “I have relied on the Office of Career & Professional Development for assistance with resume formatting and LinkedIn optimization, ensuring that I consistently present myself in the best possible light. The guidance I received was always insightful, practical and tailored to my goals, providing me with invaluable tools and strategies that I will carry with me as I embark on the next phase of my journey.”
How has HPU’s inspiring environment contributed to your success? “The physical appeal of this campus initially drew me in, but gaining a deeper understanding of the care and detail that goes into its spaces was an unexpected and rewarding experience. While classes can be stressful, stepping outside to the sounds of classical music and fountains has helped me relax and reconnect with my surroundings. This beautiful and inspiring environment has not only enhanced my appreciation for purposeful design but also deepened my understanding of student-centered spaces.”
What are the life skills HPU helped you develop that prepared you for long-term success? “Attending High Point University has been an incredibly transformative experience, equipping me with confidence and networking skills that I never thought possible. Through my involvement in various campus activities, such as working at the High Point Furniture Market, participating in Student Government, and serving as an ambassador for Undergraduate Admissions, I have had the privilege of meeting a wide range of amazing individuals. These experiences have helped me break down the barriers that once intimidated me, allowing me to confidently engage with people from all walks of life. I now feel comfortable introducing myself to others, making meaningful connections, and gaining valuable insights that will undoubtedly serve me throughout my personal and professional journey. HPU has truly opened doors to opportunities and taught me the importance of communication and relationship-building in a way I had never imagined before.”
What are the values and virtues HPU’s campus helped you develop that you’ll take with you after graduation? “I deeply commend High Point University for fostering such a remarkable community, and I am forever grateful for the incredible friendships I have formed here. The sense of family is truly at the heart of this institution, and it’s what makes this place so extraordinary. While I take great pride in my own personal achievements, I also celebrate the successes of my peers. I feel incredibly fortunate to be surrounded by such inspiring and driven individuals, each of whom is carving out a unique and impressive path for their future. The energy and passion of those around me continue to motivate and inspire me every day.”
Advice for underclassmen: “Say yes to something that pushes you outside of your comfort zone! Many of the most transformative experiences in my life happened because I took that leap. You never know what you’re capable of until you try, and stepping into the unknown can lead you to incredible people and passions. These experiences will broaden your perspective, constantly reminding you that you can achieve anything you set your mind to. Embrace everything this university has to offer, and strive to be a better, more confident version of yourself by the time you’re sitting in the commencement crowd — someone who’s grown, learned and become a positive force in the world.”
