Name: Nina Ritter, Class of 2026

Hometown: East Northport, New York

Major: Biology; minor in Math

Internship plans: Nina interned as a surgical shadow at IRCCS “Giovanni Paolo II” – Istituto Oncologico this summer in Bari, Italy for Doctors in Italy. This program allowed her to immerse herself in the dynamic environment of prestigious Italian hospitals, gaining hands-on experience in global healthcare while shadowing experienced physicians. Living alongside peers from around the world, Nina learned not only about advanced medical practices but also how to engage deeply with the rich culture and traditions of Italy.

How HPU helped you get there: “Attending High Point University has prepared me for an experience like this by giving me a solid foundation in academic excellence, critical thinking, and hands-on learning opportunities. Through HPU’s focus on experiential education, I’ve developed the skills needed to thrive in diverse and dynamic environments, including global healthcare settings. The university’s emphasis on leadership, service, and cultural competency has equipped me with the adaptability and global awareness I need to fully engage in an international medical shadowing program.”

Most impactful mentor at HPU: “The mentors who have truly shaped my journey have been the fellow students who supported me along the way. Whether we shared classes or simply crossed paths in the science building, their guidance has been invaluable. Pursuing a career in medicine can be daunting and, at times, isolating, but the sense of community within the Wanek School of Natural Sciences is incredible. The upperclassmen, who have walked the same path, are especially invested in the success of the younger students and have offered me some of the best advice on how to thrive in this field.”

What has your internship experience been like and how is it preparing you for your future? “My internship experience has been truly life-changing. It opened my eyes to the vast differences in healthcare practices around the globe, something I never realized I would find so fascinating. Before this internship, I never considered a career in surgery, but this experience sparked a newfound interest in the field. It reinforced the importance of keeping an open mind and maintaining a growth mindset. As I continue on my journey, it’s reassuring to know that multiple specialties captivate me, broadening my horizons for the future.”

What are the values and virtues HPU’s campus helped you develop that you’ll take with you after graduation? “High Point University’s campus has instilled in me a strong sense of leadership, resilience and service to others. I’ve learned the importance of integrity and ethical decision-making, which has guided me in both personal and professional situations. The university’s emphasis on excellence and personal growth has inspired me to continually strive for my best, while its focus on community and collaboration has taught me the value of building meaningful relationships. These values and virtues will stay with me long after graduation, shaping how I approach challenges and opportunities in the future.”
