Post-graduation plans: Alexa will begin her career as a Chemist for the Department of Defense in Picatinny Arsenal, New Jersey. As a DoD SMART Scholar, she was guaranteed a post-graduation job with the Department of Defense. Alexa will be a chemist for the US Army, focusing on research and development.
How HPU helped you get there: “HPU has given me numerous opportunities to prepare for and achieve my goals. Being a part of undergraduate research for all 4 years, allowed me to get hands-on experience in chemistry research and strengthen my troubleshooting skills. Presenting my research at conferences on the regional and national levels also gave me real-life experience that applies to life post-graduation.”
Most impactful mentor at HPU: “Dr. Keir Fogarty, Associate Professor of Chemistry and Co-Director of Natural Sciences Fellows. Dr. Fogarty was my research PI for all 4 years. He has become my go-to for my academics and support through coursework and other life events. I met with him every week for 30 minutes to discuss my research data, projects, and presentations. He also is the reason I found, applied for, and got the DoD SMART Scholarship. “
What are the life skills HPU helped you develop that prepared you for long-term success? “Problem solving, Communication and Independence.”
What are the values and virtues HPU’s campus helped you develop that you’ll take with you after graduation? “Emphasis on friendships and family.”
Advice for underclassmen: “It is okay to not have it all figured out when you first get to college. I came in undeclared with no clear path for my future, and I am coming out with a passion and a plan. Take every opportunity you can to learn about yourself. ”
