How HPU helped you get there: “High Point University equipped me with ample opportunities to learn both in and beyond the classroom. Through coursework, I gained a strong foundation in industry knowledge and I was able to apply those skills in real-world settings such as HYPE, HPU’s student-run advertising agency; Decision 2024, the university’s live student-led election coverage; and the Bateman Competition Team through PRSSA. These experiences helped me grow as a communicator, problem-solver, and team leader—skills that continue to guide me as I pursue my professional goals.”
Most impactful mentor at HPU: “One of the most valuable aspects of my experience at High Point University has been the meaningful connections I’ve made with faculty and the genuine care and mentorship they’ve provided. I’ve been fortunate to have several impactful mentors who have shaped my academic and professional journey, including Martin Yount, Director of Student Media and Assistant Director of Communications Fellows, Joseph Michaels, Professor of the Practice of Media Production, John Mims, Assistant Professors of the Practice of Strategic Communication, Matthew Jenkins, Assistant Professors of the Practice of Strategic Communication, and Robin Lindner. Each of them has guided me in different ways—whether through industry insight, creative encouragement, or personal support—and their mentorship has left a lasting impact on my growth and confidence.”
Advice for underclassmen: “My advice to underclassmen is to seek out a mentor in whatever field you’re passionate about and prioritize building connections with industry professionals—these relationships can open doors and provide guidance long after graduation. Get involved on campus through clubs, intramural sports, and hands-on projects to build experience and grow your network. Most importantly, carve out time each week to research your industry, connect with professionals, and keep your LinkedIn updated. Small, consistent efforts now will set you up for big opportunities later.”
