How HPU helped you get there: “The opportunities I’ve had to be involved with undergraduate research were crucial in making me a competitive applicant for graduate school. By the time I was applying last fall, I had been in a lab at HPU for three years and also had three summers of full-time research under my belt, as well as one scientific publication and five regional and national conference presentations. Additionally, my mentors in the Department of Chemistry have been incredible in helping me become not just a student, but a real scientist.”
Most impactful mentor at HPU: “My research mentor, Dr. Meghan Blackledge, Associate Professor of Chemistry and Director of Natural Sciences Fellows, has been my most impactful mentor at HPU. I joined her lab in the fall of my freshman year and have worked with her ever since. Over the years, she has helped me grow from a timid biochemistry student to a confident research scientist who is ready to contribute new knowledge to my field. She’s encouraged me to apply for several external programs and awards over the years, helped me navigate the graduate school admissions process, and has been instrumental in my growth as a scientist.”
Advice for underclassmen: “My advice for underclassmen is to take advantage of all the opportunities you can! I didn’t know I wanted to pursue a career in research when I started at HPU. I joined a lab because I wanted to give research a try, and it completely changed the course of my life. The same advice applies to joining clubs and organizations or applying for external fellowships and awards. You’ll never know how good something can be if you don’t try it out, so why not go for it?”
