Post-graduation plans: Hays will be starting her career as a Staff Assistant for Congressman John McGuire of the VA-05 District Office in Lynchburg, Virginia. As a future Staff Assistant for Congressman John McGuire, she will serve as the first point of contact for constituents, assist with office communications and scheduling and support the Congressman’s outreach efforts. This role will allow Hays to engage directly with the community and contribute to meaningful public service at the district level.
How HPU helped you get there: “High Point University prepared me to serve with purpose by combining academic excellence with real-world leadership opportunities. Through my studies and involvement in Zeta Tau Alpha and Turning Point USA, I have gained the skills and confidence to begin my career working for Congressman John McGuire — an opportunity I connected to through HPU alumni, Jake Matthews. HPU’s values-based education helped me grow in my faith and equipped me to lead with integrity.”
Most impactful mentor at HPU: “Dr. Brandon Lenoir — Associate Professor of Strategic Communication, was the most impactful mentor during my time at HPU because he believed in me and continually opened doors that shaped my future. From helping me secure an internship with CNN at the Republican National Convention to lobbying on Capitol Hill twice and interning at FOX8, he pushed me to grow outside the classroom and gain real-world experience. Dr. Lenoir’s guidance and support gave me the confidence to pursue a career in public service.”
Most impactful moment at HPU: “The most impactful moment I had at High Point University was during my first tour of the campus. I remember hearing about how the university designs its academic buildings to reflect real-world workplace environments, and it really resonated with me. Walking into the Phillips School of Business every day, I could feel that connection firsthand. The space truly mirrored the professional setting I would eventually work in, making me feel confident and prepared for the future.”
How has HPU’s inspiring environment contributed to your success? “HPU’s inspiring campus created an environment where I was constantly motivated to dream big, work hard and grow in all areas of my life. Surrounded by excellence — from the faculty to the facilities — I felt empowered to pursue ambitious goals and take advantage of every opportunity. That atmosphere of purpose and possibility played a key role in preparing me for my future in public service.”
What are the life skills HPU helped you develop that prepared you for long-term success? “HPU helped me develop life skills rooted in the values of God, Country and Family — principles that continue to guide my personal and professional decisions. Through experiential learning opportunities, faith-based growth and leadership roles on campus, I learned how to communicate with purpose, lead with integrity and serve others with humility. These experiences have prepared me for a life of service and long-term success in both government and beyond.”
What are the values and virtues HPU’s campus helped you develop that you’ll take with you after graduation? “HPU’s campus helped me develop values and virtues like integrity, gratitude, personal responsibility and faith. Surrounded by a community that emphasizes God, Country and Family, I learned to lead with purpose, serve others selflessly and stay grounded in my beliefs. These principles will continue to guide me as I begin my career in public service.”
Advice for underclassmen: “Take every opportunity to get involved, build relationships with your professors and say yes to experiences that push you outside your comfort zone. Focus on living out your values, work hard and trust that God will open the right doors. Your time at HPU is what you make of it — so be bold, be intentional and don’t be afraid to lead.”
