Here’s a quick glimpse at one of many impressive outcomes HPU graduates achieve.
Name: Karleigh Denn, Class of 2025
Hometown: Stamford, Connecticut
Major: Elementary Education
Post-graduation plans: Karleigh will begin her career as a third-grade teacher at Florence Elementary School in High Point, North Carolina. Karleigh’s teaching position involves instructing students in core subjects like reading, writing, math, science, and social studies, while fostering their social and emotional development. She will create lesson plans, assesses student progress and adapt instruction to meet diverse learning needs. Additionally, the role includes communicating with parents and collaborating with colleagues to support student success.
How HPU helped you get there: “With the Stout School of Education at High Point University being recognized as one of the top educator preparation programs in the United States, ranked in the top 10% nationally, I truly feel well-prepared to begin my teaching journey. I am confident in my knowledge and thanks to the surrounding schools in High Point, I’ve gained a wide range of valuable experiences that have added to my teaching toolbelt. Each setting has taught me something new and unique. I am extremely grateful that I chose to complete my education and student teaching at HPU, as the professors and resources here have equipped me with the skills and mindset needed to feel confident in the classroom—and to embrace the idea that learning is a lifelong process.”
Most impactful mentor at HPU: “My most impactful mentor at HPU was my freshman year success coach. I originally came to HPU as a pre-nursing major, but I quickly realized that it wasn’t the right career path for me. Despite the challenges I faced, my success coach consistently supported me as I pushed through my courses and gave them my all. Even when others encouraged me to give up, she motivated me to keep trying until I reached a point where I truly knew it was time to pursue a different path. She stood by my side through that transition and continued to encourage me as I began my new journey. To this day—three years later—she still checks in on me and follows my progress, which speaks volumes about her dedication and the lasting impact she’s had on my journey here at High Point.”
Most impactful moment at HPU: “One of the most impactful moments of my time at High Point University was creating and coaching the club cheer team over the past three years. I started this team to continue my lifelong passion for cheerleading, and it quickly became so much more than that. I watched young women from all over the country come together, build friendships, and find a sense of home through the team.
This past semester, we had the incredible opportunity to compete at a national competition in Daytona, Florida—an unforgettable experience that brought us even closer. After we returned home, the team gathered and shared heartfelt words of gratitude, many shedding tears as they spoke about how meaningful the year had been and how much my guidance as a coach had impacted them.
Knowing that something I created not only allowed me to pursue my passion but also helped shape others’ experiences at HPU is something I will carry with me forever. It reminded me of the power of leadership, connection, and doing what you love.”
How you used the Office of Career & Professional Development: “The Office of Career & Professional Development at High Point University has been a helpful resource throughout my journey. I worked with the team to strengthen my résumé and prepare for interviews, especially as I began applying for student teaching placements and future teaching positions. They offered personalized guidance, helped me present my experiences clearly and professionally, and gave me the confidence to speak about my strengths. It was incredibly reassuring to have support from people who truly want to see you succeed beyond graduation.”
How has HPU’s inspiring environment contributed to your success? “HPU’s inspiring environment has played a meaningful role in my success by fostering connection, exploration, and a true sense of belonging. The university consistently hosts social events that encourage students to build relationships, which has helped me feel supported both personally and academically. The beauty of the campus itself also contributes to a positive daily experience—it’s so inviting that it naturally encourages students to get outside, walk around, and enjoy their living and learning space. This atmosphere not only motivates you to stay active and engaged but also creates daily opportunities to discover new areas of campus.”
What are the life skills HPU helped you develop that prepared you for long-term success? “High Point University has helped me develop several life skills that will support my long-term success, both personally and professionally. One of the most valuable has been perseverance—learning to push through challenges and stay focused even when things get difficult. I’ve also built strong willpower, allowing me to overcome obstacles and work through areas that didn’t come easily to me. Most importantly, HPU has continuously nurtured my passion for teaching, surrounding me with a supportive community that has fueled my growth and confidence. These skills—resilience, self-motivation, and a clear sense of purpose—have prepared me to take on the future with confidence and heart.”
What are the values and virtues HPU’s campus helped you develop that you’ll take with you after graduation? “As I start this next chapter, I feel confident in my ability to create an engaging and supportive classroom environment. Throughout my student teaching and HPU’s education program, I have learned the importance of perseverance, empathy and a strong work ethic. These values have shaped me not only as an educator but as a person. I am looking forward to carrying these values with me as I begin my role as a third-grade teacher.”
Advice for underclassmen: “College can be challenging—socially, academically or both—but give it a chance. You’re building a new life for yourself in a brand-new place, and that takes time. Take every opportunity to meet new people, stay engaged and get involved in things that matter to you. Push yourself to do the most and don’t feel like you need to settle for less. The habits and relationships you build now will shape your experience not only in college, but long after graduation. Be bold, be curious and trust that it’s okay to grow outside of your comfort zone.”
