Major: Biology
Post-graduation plans: Tyler will continue his education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Chapel Hill, North Carolina to pursue his Doctorate of Dental Surgery.
How HPU helped you get there: “High Point University has been more than a place to earn my degree; it’s where I discovered who I am and what I’m meant to do. Through challenging academics, collaborative research, and mentorship from faculty who genuinely cared, I developed the confidence, curiosity, and integrity that now guide my path in dentistry. HPU didn’t just shape my professionalism and academic growth; it taught me how to serve with purpose and compassion. The kindness shown to me by faculty and staff across campus reminded me that impact often comes through presence and care. Because of HPU, I’m prepared to pursue a future where I can make a meaningful difference in others’ lives, just as this community has in mine.”
Most impactful mentor at HPU: “Dr. Coffield has been my most impactful mentor at HPU. His dedication to academic excellence and personal mentorship pushed me to grow both as a student and as a person. Over our three years of research together, he taught me invaluable technical skills, from experimental design to data analysis, and trusted me to lead independent projects under his supervision. That trust built my confidence and sense of responsibility in the lab. Beyond the technical, he also shared life lessons about integrity, perseverance, and how to lead with compassion. Dr. Coffield modeled what it means to live with purpose, and his influence has shaped the kind of healthcare professional and person I strive to be.”
How has HPU’s inspiring environment contributed to your success? “HPU’s inspiring environment isn’t just about beautiful buildings, it’s about the people. From professors who stayed late to mentor me, to staff members who remembered my name and asked how I was doing, I was constantly surrounded by individuals who genuinely cared. That level of compassion and encouragement motivated me to show up as my best self every day. The kindness and support I experienced across campus inspired me to pursue excellence, serve others, and carry those values into everything I do.”
What are the life skills HPU helped you develop that prepared you for long-term success? “HPU helped me develop essential life skills that extend far beyond the classroom. I learned how to communicate effectively, think critically, and approach challenges with confidence and resilience. Through hands-on research, leadership opportunities, and mentorship, I gained time management, professionalism, and a strong work ethic. Just as importantly, the care and support I received from faculty and staff taught me the value of empathy, presence, and compassion, qualities that will guide me in both my career and personal life.”
What are the values and virtues HPU’s campus helped you develop that you’ll take with you after graduation? “As I mentioned above, HPU helped me develop values like integrity, empathy, and a strong commitment to service. Surrounded by mentors who led with purpose and compassion, I learned to show up for others, stay grounded in my goals, and value community.”
Advice for underclassmen: “Take every opportunity to grow inside and outside the classroom. Build strong relationships with your professors and mentors, because their guidance will shape more than just your academics. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, take initiative, and pursue what excites you. Most importantly, lead with kindness, stay curious, and trust that the habits you build now will carry you far beyond graduation.”
