Here’s a quick glimpse at one of many impressive outcomes HPU graduates achieve.
Name: Faith Wolpert, Class of 2025
Hometown: Hampton Falls, New Hampshire
Major: Sports Media; Social Media Marketing
Post-graduation plans: Faith is starting her career as a News Producer for WXII 12 News in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She began working at WXII in March as a part-time Associate Producer — mainly tying up loose ends and helping out anywhere needed in the newsroom while training and improving her news judgment. After graduation, she began to train on the 4:30 A.M. Newscast. By two weeks in, she was already producing her own show and was promoted to a full-time News Producer at WXII. Now, as a News Producer, Faith produces various 30-minute newscasts, which consist of choosing and writing up the news you see anchors read on air, creating the graphics and lower-thirds you see on your screen, as well as timing out her show. Additionally, she also facilitates live reporter cut-ins, works the assignment desk by investigating and confirming stories and works as a digital producer writing stories for their webpage.
How HPU helped you get there: “HPU helped me prepare for this role by teaching me to never be afraid of a challenge, and by giving me every possible opportunity to succeed. HPU pushed me to do things outside of my comfort zone. My professors never failed to give assignments that not only challenged your brain, but they challenged your abilities to communicate, to be efficient and to never give up.”
Most impactful mentor at HPU: “The most impactful mentors I had at HPU were Kenneth Medlin — Professor of the Practice of Journalism, and Dr. Bobby Hayes — Chair and Professor of the Practice of Journalism. These two professors opened my eyes to more sides of the news and sports industry than I originally was open to seeing. This helped me grow my love for journalism and pushed me to grow my skills beyond just sports coverage.”
Most impactful moment at HPU: “The most impactful moment I had at HPU was when the NQSC flew me and two of my peers to Providence, Rhode Island, for the opportunity to cover our basketball team live and produce interviews and packages for our school to air on YouTube. The moment that the impact of the opportunity really hit me was when I stood in the locker room interviewing our HPU basketball team players following their game versus Purdue. Being the only female in the locker room made me realize I was truly going to be able to make a difference in the world and in the industry I loved, and HPU placed me right here to do so — they believed in me. From that moment on, I have now never failed to believe in myself.”
What are the life skills HPU helped you develop that prepared you for long-term success? “HPU is who I credit to being a person who thrives under pressure. The more you challenge me, the more I will succeed. This is my number one PREMIER LIFE SKILL.”
What are the values and virtues HPU’s campus helped you develop that you’ll take with you after graduation? “The value at HPU that will never leave me is the sense of community. You are never alone at HPU. Everyone around you wants you to succeed and they want to support you on your growth journey. My professors saw something in me before I saw it in myself, and they stood by me and helped me get to where they knew I could be, which I am forever grateful for.”
Advice for underclassmen: “As an underclassman, I truly embraced all of the resources and mentors around me, and they did not disappoint. I would encourage all future students to do the same. You may have to go out and find the people who can help you blossom, but I promise you that you are there and you must take advantage of them — you won’t regret it.”
