Name: Kierra Maier, Class of 2025

Hometown: Madison, Wisconsin

Major: International Business and Finance; minor in Spanish

Post-graduation plans: Kierra will be starting her career as a LEAD Associate for TowneBank in Suffolk, Virginia. Being a LEAD Associate in the LEAD Program allows her to work across multiple departments at TowneBank, including commercial lending, private banking and insurance. It’s designed to prepare associates for long-term leadership by combining hands-on experience with professional development.

How HPU helped you get there: “High Point University created an environment where I could take on meaningful leadership roles and grow through experience. I had the chance to get involved across campus, which helped me build confidence, communication skills and a strong sense of responsibility. The university emphasizes professional development and encourages students to lead by example, which helped prepare me for life after graduation. I took full advantage of High Point University’s Career and Professional Development resources throughout my time on campus. I attended nearly every career expo, which helped me explore different industries, connect with employers and ultimately secure both my internships and my full-time job offer. Additionally, I worked closely with the Career and Professional Development team to refine my resume and build strong, tailored cover letters.”

Most impactful mentor at HPU: “I’ve been fortunate to learn from several faculty and staff members at HPU who supported me in different ways. Whether it was a professor who challenged me academically, a staff member who guided me through my leadership roles, or someone in the Career & Professional Development office who helped me prepare for the real world, each played a role in shaping my growth. Their combined impact helped me become more confident and prepared for what comes next.

Most impactful moment at HPU: “One of the most impactful moments I had at HPU was joining Alpha Chi Omega in the spring of my freshman year. After feeling disconnected during my first semester, joining Greek life gave me a strong sense of community and introduced me to lifelong friends. It also opened the door to leadership, which led me to serve as Vice President of Finance for my chapter. That role helped me grow professionally and gave me valuable experience I’ll carry into my future career.”

How has HPU’s inspiring environment contributed to your success? “HPU’s campus environment played a big role in helping me stay productive and prepared. I often used private study spaces for virtual interviews and professional meetings, which gave me a quiet, reliable setting to present myself confidently. At the same time, having access to open, well-designed public spaces helped me stay focused by giving me a change of scenery when I needed it. That balance made it easier to stay motivated, manage my time and stay on track with my goals.”

What are the life skills HPU helped you develop that prepared you for long-term success? “High Point University helped me build essential life skills such as clear communication, adaptability and time management. Taking on leadership roles while keeping up with academics taught me how to stay organized and lead with purpose. These abilities will support my long-term success by helping me navigate challenges, collaborate effectively and stay focused on my goals. They’ve prepared me to grow and thrive in both my career and personal life.”

What are the values and virtues HPU’s campus helped you develop that you’ll take with you after graduation? “At High Point University, I learned the importance of accountability, professionalism and leading with intention. The campus environment encouraged me to hold myself to a high standard while staying grounded in respect and empathy. These are values I’ll carry with me as I move forward beyond graduation.”

Advice for underclassmen: “My advice for underclassmen would be to take advantage of every opportunity to get involved and build real-world experience, whether through leadership roles, internships, or campus resources. Start early, ask questions and stay open to learning throughout your entire time at HPU.”
