Hometown: Downingtown, Pennsylvania
Major: Chemistry; minor in Mathematics
Post-graduation plans: Laura is starting her career as a Synthetic Chemist for Signature Science in Atlantic City, New Jersey. As a Synthetic Chemist, she will be conducting research, synthesis and quality control of homemade explosives while also developing new synthesis methods and performing related wet chemistry procedures. These tasks are awarded to Signature Science for support to the Department of Homeland Security and the Science and Technology Directorate.
How HPU helped you get there: “HPU allowed me to explore different fields within my major and minor, helping me better understand what opportunities lay ahead. During my time at HPU, I built meaningful connections that accelerated my career and deepened my appreciation for chemistry and math. The Office of Career and Professional Development also played a role in helping me secure my job by helping me with interview preparation.”
Most impactful mentor at HPU: “Dr. Jenny Sharpe, Chair and Professor of Mathematical Sciences, has been my most impactful mentor at HPU. Since freshman year, she has seen the potential that I did not always see in myself and her continued support and encouragement have been incredibly important in guiding my professional development.”
Most impactful moment at HPU: “My most impactful moment at HPU was presenting my research at HighPurcs. This experience helped me grow as a speaker and taught me how to communicate effectively with audiences of varying backgrounds and levels of understanding.”
Advice for underclassmen: “After graduating, I advise underclassmen that it is okay not to have a set path, but stay open to opportunities that allow you to try new things. You never know where it could lead.”
