How HPU helped you get there: “HPU gave me amazing opportunities from day one, such as hands-on research experience, which helped build my confidence and skill set early on. These opportunities not only prepared me for future success but also made me stand out as an applicant. By gaining real-world experience and working closely with supportive faculty, I was able to strengthen my resume and present myself as a capable, driven candidate in both academic and professional settings. The Office of Career & Professional Development also helped me throughout my time at HPU. I met with them to get feedback on my resume and advice on personal statements and essays. They also helped me explore which programs to apply for and connected me with additional resources that aligned with my goals. Their guidance was always practical, encouraging, and supportive—it made the whole process feel less overwhelming and more focused.”
Most impactful mentor at HPU: “During my time at High Point University, I was fortunate to be mentored by two incredibly impactful professors: Dr. Laura Nagy and Dr. Kelly Curtis. Each played a unique and transformative role in my academic and personal growth. Dr. Laura Nagy, Assistant Professor of Psychology, was my research mentor for four consecutive semesters. Working in her lab not only deepened my interest in psychology but also taught me the value of persistence, precision, and intellectual curiosity. Dr. Nagy pushed me to challenge myself and supported me through each stage of the research process. Her guidance helped me build confidence in my abilities, and she took the time to mentor me both academically and personally. Watching my own growth under her leadership was one of the most rewarding aspects of my HPU experience. Equally influential was Dr. Kelly Curtis, Associate Professor of Psychology. Her unwavering support and infectious enthusiasm for learning inspired me to fully embrace my academic journey. She encouraged me to pursue my goals with confidence and curiosity, and her belief in my potential had a lasting impact on my mindset. Dr. Curtis helped instill in me a true passion for learning that I will carry forward in my career and life. Together, Dr. Nagy and Dr. Curtis helped shape not only the student I became but also the person I am today. I am deeply grateful for their mentorship.”
Most impactful moment at HPU: “My most impactful moment at HPU was meeting my best friend, Kayla — a connection made possible by the incredible HPU staff member, Amy Epstein. From the moment we met, Kayla and I clicked instantly and quickly formed a strong bond. Together, we embraced leadership opportunities and supported each other every step of the way. Her encouragement played a key role in my decision to become President of Hillel, a role that helped me grow both personally and professionally. That one introduction not only gave me a lifelong friend, but also opened the door to meaningful leadership experiences that shaped my time at HPU.”
How has HPU’s inspiring environment contributed to your success? “HPU’s inspiring environment played a major role in my success by constantly encouraging me to strive for excellence. Surrounded by high-achieving peers, supportive faculty and a campus culture built on growth and positivity, I felt motivated to push beyond my limits. One of the most impactful aspects was how approachable the faculty were — they were always willing to offer guidance, answer questions and provide encouragement. The consistent support, access to valuable resources and emphasis on personal development created an atmosphere where I felt truly empowered to pursue my goals with confidence. HPU didn’t just provide an education — it provided a foundation for success.”
What are the life skills HPU helped you develop that prepared you for long-term success? “HPU helped me develop essential life skills that will stay with me long after graduation. Through every experience, from academics to research to campus involvement, I built confidence in my abilities, learned to be independent and cultivated a strong sense of curiosity. Most importantly, HPU encouraged a growth mindset, which taught me to embrace challenges, seek continuous improvement and stay open to learning. These skills have prepared me not just for my next step, but for long-term success in both my career and personal life.”
What are the values and virtues HPU’s campus helped you develop that you’ll take with you after graduation? “HPU’s campus environment helped me develop values and virtues that I’ll carry with me long after graduation. Being surrounded by driven peers and supportive faculty inspired a strong sense of determination and persistence in everything I do. I also discovered a deeper passion for learning, both inside and outside the classroom, that continues to motivate me to grow personally and professionally. These values have shaped not only how I approach challenges, but also how I define success.”
Advice for underclassmen: “My biggest advice for underclassmen is to take advantage of all the resources HPU offers right from the start. Programs like the Peer Mentor Program and the Office of Career and Professional Development are there to guide you, connect you with opportunities and help you prepare for life after graduation. Get involved on campus, join clubs that interest you and don’t be afraid to step into leadership roles. The more you engage, the more confident and prepared you’ll feel when it’s time to take the next step in your journey.”
