Name: Ethan Parker, Class of 2025

Hometown: Concord, North Carolina

Major: Media Communications, minor in Sport Management

Post-graduation plans: Ethan will begin his career as a Media Rotational Associate at Bloomberg Media in New York, New York. As a rotational associate, Ethan will rotate through three different teams over one year, spending four months on each. In these rotations, Ethan will learn, network and contribute to the value of the Bloomberg Media floor before choosing a permanent placement.

How HPU helped you get there: “The freedom to join different clubs and organizations helped me significantly, forcing me to develop into a strong leader and quickly improve my presentation and communication skills, two of the most important skills in today’s world. Career and Professional Development was also a huge help, motivating me to tailor my resume and consistently dress professionally when aiming to wow employers.”

How you used the Office of Career & Professional Development: “Yes, I was always in their office or talking with Vice President of Career and Professional Development Dr. Doug Hall. They have taught me how to present myself. Without them, I’m not sure I would have landed this job with Bloomberg.”

Most impactful mentor at HPU: “Dr. Doug Hall, Vice President of Career and Professional Development. He has always been there for me as a student and never fails to support the HPU community in any way he can. I have also been able to work closely with him at times, and he impresses me every day while also helping me to help others! “

Most impactful moment at HPU: “I joined my fraternity, Kappa Alpha Psi, in my freshman year of college. It was a surreal moment, walking into a bond I can call forever with my brothers. This is where I began my journey at HPU, and it pushed me into becoming the person I am today. Without it, I don’t know how things would have turned out.”

How has HPU’s inspiring environment contributed to your success? “HPU is a place that inspires you to work hard. There are people all around you doing incredible things, and they want to help you contribute to the success of HPU’s students. It’s more than a home; it’s a family, and I wouldn’t go back and get my degree anywhere else.”

What are the life skills HPU helped you develop that prepared you for long-term success? “Communication, problem-solving, and time management. HPU allows you to choose how you’d like to handle your schedule and what extracurriculars outside of classes you’d like to be involved in. I was able to learn the hard way how important managing your time and dividing up your work is. This quickly allowed me to develop great communication skills when working with others, presenting to them, and also providing feedback. Problems are also inevitable; however, thanks to HPU, I was able to learn how to think on my feet quickly, whether that’s in life or an interview setting professionally.”

What are the values and virtues HPU’s campus helped you develop that you’ll take with you after graduation? “I will never forget the value of time and the friends I made along the way!”

Advice for underclassmen: “Get involved on campus early. The skills you learn and patterns you notice at a young age will stay with you forever and they allow you time to sharpen those skills in preparation for life after college. Also, network every single day if possible. Get out of your dorm room and go and meet others, join clubs and find out what your peers are doing. See how they are successful and then build your own routine and way of things.”
