Name: Brian Hanway; Class of 2026

Hometown: Newtown Square, Pennsylvania 

Major: Sport Management; minor in Sports Media

Internship plans: Brian interned for the New York Boulders this summer as their Broadcast and Media Relations Intern in Pomona, New York. As a Broadcast and Media Relations Intern, he broadcast home and away games on their Frontier League Network. In addition, Brian distributed game notes into programs that they hand out to fans and write post-game recaps after the conclusion of every game.

How HPU helped you get there: “HPU taught me the importance of networking. I wouldn’t have gotten my internship if I hadn’t networked with my employer on LinkedIn. Networking will help me achieve my future goals because if I ever want to advance in the sports media industry, I need to be able to have conversations with other people in the industry who can help me advance.” 

Most impactful mentor at HPU: “Professor Jim Scott, Assistant Professor of the Practice of Sports Media, has been my most impactful mentor at HPU. He wrote my letter of recommendation and helped guide me through my internship search last year.”

Most impactful moment at HPU: “My most impactful moment at HPU was being able to call the Men’s and Women’s Basketball games when the Big South Tournament was held at High Point.”

How has your internship experience been like and how is it preparing you for your future? “My internship experience showed me what a day-to-day looks like with working for a professional sports organization. I have received lots of feedback in regards to calling games and how to make my recaps look more professionally written.”

How has HPU’s inspiring environment contributed to your success? “The campus has contributed to my success with all of the opportunities it presents, such as the TV studio, the School of Communication as a whole, as well as the athletic facilities where I conduct most of my work.”

What are the life skills HPU helped you develop that prepared you for long-term success? “The life skills HPU helped me develop were networking, flexibility, growth mindset and the importance of working hard.”

What are the values and virtues HPU’s campus helped you develop that you’ll take with you after graduation? “The values and virtues HPU’s campus helped me develop were God, family and country; bend don’t break, be who you are and be that well.”

Advice for underclassmen: “Take advantage of every opportunity that HPU has to offer. Don’t wait to get involved. Get involved as early as you can; it will help out in the long run.”
