Name: Malia Agostinelli; Class of 2026

Hometown: Hickory, North Carolina

Major: English and Journalism

Internship plans: Malia interned at Interior Design Magazine this summer as their Digital and Editorial Intern in New York. In this role, she conducted numerous interviews with designers and wrote engaging articles that were published in Interior Design Magazine. In addition, she also worked on developing a new podcast for the Surround Podcast Network, while learning the intricacies of writing for the world of design, and made meaningful, lasting connections.

How HPU helped you get there: “I would not have gotten here without the mentorship of Dr. Hayes — Chair and Professor of the Practice of Journalism, and Dr. Eltantawy — Dean of the Nido R. Qubein School of Communication. Under them, I have learned crucial interviewing methods, copyediting skills and professionalism as a journalist. They have inspired me to meet high standards, and I am forever grateful for their support.”

Most impactful mentor at HPU: “My most impactful mentor at HPU is Dr. Carlson, Associate Professor of English. Ever since my freshman year, he has believed in me, pushed me to succeed and celebrated every single one of my accomplishments. Without him, I wouldn’t be the student I am today.”

Most impactful moment at HPU: “My most impactful moment at HPU was starting my internship and realizing that I already had all the skills necessary to succeed. HPU set me up for success and made me a standout intern from the beginning.”

What are the life skills HPU helped you develop that prepared you for long-term success? “The life skills HPU helped me develop were networking, time management, professional appearance and conducting interviews.”

Advice for underclassmen: “Make connections with your professors. They are there to help you, guide you and watch you succeed. Also, don’t say no to opportunities just because you think they don’t interest you. You never know what can happen.”
