Here’s a quick glimpse at one of many impressive outcomes HPU graduates achieve.
Name: Sam Levine; Class of 2025
Hometown: Roslyn, New York
Major: Entrepreneurship
Post-graduation plans: Sam will be starting his career as a Stats Auditor for the National Basketball Association (NBA) in Secaucus, New Jersey. As the Stats Auditor, he is responsible for ensuring the accuracy and consistency of live game statistics during NBA events. The role involves monitoring and verifying nightly stat feeds, communicating with in-arena statisticians to correct discrepancies and serving as the primary statistician in the event of a courtside system failure to maintain accurate and uninterrupted game data.
How HPU helped you get there: “High Point University has been instrumental in helping me grow into the person and professional I am today. The university’s focus on hands-on learning, leadership and innovation allowed me to apply what I learned in the classroom to real-world opportunities. Through mentorship, networking events and access to career development resources, I gained the confidence and skills to pursue my passions. HPU’s entrepreneurial environment encouraged me to think big, take initiative and stay driven—qualities that have been essential in achieving my goals and advancing my career.”
Most impactful mentor at HPU: “Kathryn Elliott, Chair and Professor of the Practice of Entrepreneurship, was the most impactful mentor I had at HPU. While I had the privilege of taking multiple entrepreneurship classes with her, her greatest impact came through mentorship outside the classroom. She consistently pushed me to reach higher, encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone and placed me in situations that challenged me to grow in ways I never would have on my own. Her guidance and belief in my potential have been instrumental in shaping my personal and professional development.”
Most impactful moment at HPU: “Joining the High Point University Men’s Basketball team as a student manager in the fall of 2022 was one of the most impactful moments of my time at HPU and it played a major role in helping me secure a job with the NBA. Gaining a behind-the-scenes look at how a Division I program operates provided invaluable experience in organization, communication and professionalism. Being part of the team taught me the importance of hard work, attention to detail and collaboration, while also allowing me to learn from the staff. This opportunity not only shaped my growth but also opened doors to start my own NIL agency, giving me firsthand experience in building and running a business from the ground up.”
How you used Career and Professional Development: “I used the Office of Career & Professional Development extensively throughout my time at HPU to prepare for my career and refine my professional skills. I worked one-on-one with career advisors to tailor my résumé and cover letters, attended workshops on networking and interviewing and took advantage of events that connected me with industry professionals. These resources helped me gain confidence, develop a professional mindset and ultimately positioned me to secure opportunities like my role with the NBA.”
What are the life skills HPU helped you develop that prepared you for long-term success? “HPU has helped me develop essential life skills such as resilience, professionalism and relationship building. I learned how to handle challenges with a positive mindset, follow up effectively in a professional manner and build genuine connections that lead to long-term growth. These skills have prepared me to succeed in any environment and continue growing both personally and professionally.”
Advice for underclassmen: “My advice for underclassmen is to always focus on adding value in everything you do. It’s easy to follow what others are doing, but what will set you apart is the impact and effort you bring to every opportunity. Additionally, your network is your net worth—take every chance to build meaningful connections. Don’t be afraid of failure; I truly believe you cannot succeed without experiencing setbacks. Learn from them, grow and come back stronger each time.”
