Name: Khayla Gattison, Class of 2026

Hometown: Darlington, South Carolina 

Major: Sociology & Anthropology, minor in Criminal Justice

Post-graduation plans: Khayla is beginning her career as a Behavioral Technician with Compleat Kidz in High Point, North Carolina. As a Behavior Technician, she’ll provide one-on-one support to children by implementing behavior intervention plans under the supervision of a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. In this role, Khayla will collect data, reinforce positive behaviors and support skill development in communication, social interaction and daily living. Her work centers on patience, consistency and individualized care.

How HPU helped you get there: “High Point University prepared me for this role by giving me a strong foundation in human behavior, social systems and ethical practice. Coursework in sociology, anthropology and criminal justice helped me understand behavior within cultural and social contexts, while hands-on leadership experiences strengthened my confidence working with diverse populations. HPU played a key role in shaping my long-term goal of pursuing social work and advocacy.”

Most impactful mentor at HPU: “My most impactful mentor at High Point University is Dr. Robert Tillman, director of the Bonner Leaders Program at HPU. Through his guidance and mentorship, he has supported my growth as a leader and service-oriented student. Working closely with him through the HPU Community Engagement Center and local food pantries allowed me to deepen my commitment to community service while gaining meaningful leadership and professional experience.”

Most impactful moment at HPU: “One of my most impactful moments at HPU was applying classroom knowledge to real-world service and leadership roles. Seeing the connection between theory and practice confirmed my passion for working with children and advocating for vulnerable populations. This experience solidified my career path in behavioral health and social services.”

How has HPU’s inspiring environment contributed to your success? “HPU’s inspiring campus fostered a culture of motivation, excellence and intentional growth. Being surrounded by driven peers and supportive faculty encouraged me to set high standards for myself and remain committed to my goals. The environment consistently pushed me to strive for both personal and professional success.”

How did the Office of Career and Professional Development contribute to your success? “I used Career & Professional Development to refine my resume, prepare for interviews and better articulate my professional goals. Their guidance helped me present my skills and experiences clearly, which contributed to my confidence when applying for and securing my current position. The office also reinforced professional expectations in workplace settings.”

What are the life skills HPU helped you develop that prepared you for long-term success? “HPU helped me develop effective communication, emotional intelligence, time management and professionalism. Balancing academics, leadership positions and work taught me how to remain organized and adaptable in high-pressure environments. These skills directly translate to my work as a Behavior Technician and future career in human services. In addition, HPU’s emphasis on professionalism and dining etiquette prepared me to navigate any professional setting with confidence. The skills I gained allow me to communicate effectively and represent myself well in both formal and informal environments.”

What are the values and virtues HPU’s campus helped you develop that you’ll take with you after graduation? “HPU reinforced values of compassion, accountability, servant leadership and respect for others. The university’s focus on character development encouraged me to approach my work with empathy while maintaining ethical and professional standards. These values guide how I support clients and collaborate with families and professionals.”

Advice for underclassmen: “Get involved early, build meaningful relationships with mentors and seek out hands-on experiences related to your career goals. Take advantage of campus resources and don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. Success after graduation comes from preparation, consistency and leading with purpose.”
