How HPU helped you get there: “High Point University helped prepare me for the future by emphasizing experiential learning, leadership and professional readiness. Through hands-on opportunities, close faculty mentorship in the Music and Business Departments, and leadership roles across campus, I developed strong communication, time-management and problem-solving skills that translate directly to the professional world. HPU also encouraged me to pursue both my academic passions and career goals with confidence, helping me grow personally and professionally as I transition into my full-time role after graduation, learning from mistakes along the way. “
Most impactful mentor at HPU: “The most impactful mentor I’ve had at High Point University is Director of Instrumental Studies, Dr. Brian Meixner. Through both my ups and downs, he has been a constant source of support, understanding and encouragement, serving as an almost father-like presence during my time at HPU. He leads by example in everything he does, through his integrity, care for students and commitment to his communities—and his genuine investment in my growth has made a lasting impact on who I am and how I strive to help others whenever possible.”
Most impactful moment at HPU: “In addition to majoring in music and trombone performance, I’ve also been a member of the Spirit of HPU pep band for four years. One of the most impactful moments of my time at High Point University was getting to perform live music for my family for the first time in three years in 2025. That moment brought together years of growth, hard work and resilience, and allowed me to share something deeply personal with the people who have supported me every step of my creative journey. It reminded me why I pursued music in the first place and made my HPU experience especially meaningful. “
How has HPU’s inspiring environment contributed to your success? “HPU’s inspiring environment consistently pushed me to succeed by setting high expectations and surrounding me with motivated peers, faculty and staff who believed in my potential. The culture of excellence on campus challenged me to take ownership of my goals, step outside my comfort zone and pursue opportunities I may not have otherwise considered. Being in an environment where success is both expected and supported played a major role in helping me grow academically, professionally and personally.”
How did the Office of Career and Professional Development contribute to your success? “I actively used Career & Professional Development to strengthen my professional skills and prepare for life after graduation. Through the office, I was able to connect with a business professional within my company, which helped me build meaningful relationships and gain insight into my future career path. Career & Professional Development also supported me in refining my resume, communication skills and overall professional presence, all of which played an important role in my career readiness.”
What are the life skills HPU helped you develop that prepared you for long-term success? “High Point University helped me develop essential life skills that support long-term success, including effective communication, leadership, time management and adaptability. Through academic rigor, campus involvement and real-world experiences such as HPU in the City, I learned how to collaborate with diverse groups, manage competing priorities and lead with accountability and professionalism. HPU also emphasized confidence, integrity and service, which have all shaped how I approach both my career and personal growth beyond graduation.”
What are the values and virtues HPU’s campus helped you develop that you’ll take with you after graduation? “HPU’s campus reinforced values like gratitude, discipline and doing what you say you will do. From professors who held high standards, to daily interactions with peers and mentors, the environment instilled accountability, professionalism and service to others. These core values will continue to guide how I show up in my career, build relationships and lead with purpose after graduation.”
Advice for underclassmen: “My advice to underclassmen is to take full advantage of opportunities early and stay open to growth. Get involved, build relationships with faculty and mentors, and don’t be afraid to ask questions or seek guidance. Most importantly, be consistent and intentional as showing up prepared, working hard and maintaining a positive attitude will open doors long after graduation.”
