Here’s a quick glimpse at one of many impressive outcomes HPU graduates achieve.
Name: Lauren Mazich, Class of 2021
Hometown: Hillsborough, New Jersey
Major: Sports Media, minor in Social Media
Post-graduation plans: Lauren has landed a role as the Associate Director of Communications at Big Sky Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah. She serves as the conference communications contact for women’s soccer, softball, women’s basketball and volleyball. Lauren is responsible for all social media work, press releases, statistics, awards and media coverage regarding those specific sports.
How HPU helped you get there: “High Point University played a big role in kick-starting my career. Between the Nido R. Qubein School of Communication and the athletic department, HPU exposed me to different aspects of the sports communication industry, allowing me to figure out which direction I wanted to go post-graduation.”
Most impactful mentor at HPU: “Kevin McMahon, previous HPU director of athletic communications, played a huge role in getting my career started in sports. I was lucky enough to intern with the athletic communications department for three years while I was a student. During that time, Kevin was the head of the communications department and showed me the ropes of being a sports information director.”
Most impactful moment at HPU: “My internship with HPU’s athletic communications department played a big role in building the foundation of my career. I was exposed to a lot of skills early on, and the hands-on experience for multiple years prepared me for the sports industry. “
How did the Office of Career and Professional Development contribute to your success? “Networking has been a big aspect of my journey. After graduation, I lived in three different states within three years, which allowed me to develop connections all over the country. In a community as close as the sports industry, connections and relationships go a long way, not only professionally but personally as well.”
Advice for underclassmen: “Start building connections early! It may sound cliché, but especially in an industry as tight and competitive as sports, you never know who knows who and that can really benefit you down the road.”
