Here’s a quick glimpse at one of many impressive outcomes HPU graduates achieve.
Name: Marlo Hemerson, Class of 2023
Hometown: Parker, Colorado
Major: Neuroscience and Chemistry
Post-graduation plans: Marlo has joined KBI Biopharma as a Research Associate I in Durham, North Carolina. As a Research Associate I on the Analytical Development team, Marlo will work in the laboratory to test and evaluate early-stage medicines (those in preclinical and stage I clinical trials) before they reach patients. She’ll use various analytical techniques to assess drug quality, stability and consistency, while analyzing data and troubleshooting methods in a regulated environment. Marlo’s work helps ensure that potential therapies are safe and reliable as they move through early clinical development.
How HPU helped you get there: “HPU played a critical role in preparing me for my current position. Courses like Instrumental Analysis and Quantitative Analysis gave me hands-on experience with many of the techniques I now use in industry, while my independent zebrafish research taught me confidence, problem-solving and ownership in the lab. Just as importantly, the network I built at HPU ultimately helped connect me to opportunities like my role at KBI.”
Most impactful mentor at HPU: “My most impactful mentor at was Dr. Jackson Sparks, former assistant professor of biology at HPU. Although he is no longer with the university, his continued support speaks volumes about the dedication of HPU faculty. He has been a consistent source of guidance for me both professionally and personally beyond graduation. In addition, Dr. Kristin Ackerman, associate professor and assistant dean of faculty affairs and academic operations, and Dr. Meghan Blackledge, associate professor of chemistry and director of natural science fellows, have provided me with invaluable insight as I’ve navigated post-graduate decisions. I truly feel that I could reach out to any Wanek School of Natural Sciences professors and be met with genuine support and encouragement.”
Most impactful moment at HPU: “One of the most impactful experiences I had at HPU was being part of the Natural Sciences Fellows program. That community gave me access to incredible mentors who supported me throughout my time at HPU and continued to guide me after graduation. It also provided meaningful leadership opportunities, hands-on research experience and a supportive peer network that helped me grow both as a scientist and as an individual. That experience shaped my academic path and continues to influence my professional journey.”
How has HPU’s inspiring environment contributed to your success? “HPU’s inspiring environment created a culture where excellence felt expected but also supported. Being surrounded by motivated peers, accessible faculty and modern facilities pushed me to take my work seriously and envision a future beyond the classroom.”
What are the life skills HPU helped you develop that prepared you for long-term success? “HPU helped me develop confidence in my foundational knowledge and comfort working in state-of-the-art laboratory environments. Having access to modern facilities as a student made the transition to industry much smoother and taught me how to work professionally in advanced scientific settings.“
What are the values and virtues HPU’s campus helped you develop that you’ll take with you after graduation? “HPU fostered a mindset of adaptability and growth that I have brought with me post-grad. Through my research, leadership roles and rigorous academics, I learned to take initiative and navigate uncertainty. Both of these values were essential during my transition into the biotech industry from healthcare.”
Advice for underclassmen: “My biggest advice is not to feel pressured to have everything figured out (I know, easier said than done). It’s OK if your path changes — even into something you never imagined yourself doing. Focus on building strong foundational skills, seeking out mentors and staying open to new opportunities. Growth often comes from being willing to explore, adapt and trust the process!”
