How HPU helped you get there: “All of my English classes and professors were extremely helpful to this accomplishment. The community through the English department is incredibly encouraging, and they pushed me through professional and creative writing to be the best I could be. I worked at the HPU Print Shop during my time here, and I was able to write blogs for the HPU Library as well as other companies, and HPU helped me get those connections and opportunities. “

How has HPU’s inspiring environment contributed to your success? “High Point University’s inspiring environment played a big role in turning my work ethic and drive into real opportunities. I’ve always been motivated to work hard and push myself, but being surrounded by a campus that emphasizes excellence and a 99% outcomes culture made it possible to channel that drive into meaningful experiences and growth. The support, resources and expectation to pursue success helped me take advantage of opportunities that prepared me for the next step after graduation.”

What are the life skills HPU helped you develop that prepared you for long-term success? “High Point University helped me develop the drive and endurance needed to succeed long-term. Through challenging coursework, leadership opportunities and a culture that encourages high standards, I learned the value of hard work, persistence and staying disciplined even when things get difficult. HPU also reinforced the importance of showing up consistently, pushing through challenges and maintaining a strong work ethic—skills that continue to shape how I approach my career and personal goals.”

What are the values and virtues HPU’s campus helped you develop that you’ll take with you after graduation? “High Point University helped instill values like integrity, perseverance and a strong work ethic that I will carry with me after graduation. The campus culture encourages students to pursue excellence while staying humble, treating others with respect and leading with character. It also reinforced the importance of discipline, resilience and building meaningful relationships—virtues that will guide both my professional career and personal life.”

Most impactful mentor at HPU: “I have two: Dr. Matthew Carlson, associate professor of English, was by far the most impactful mentor on HPU’s campus. I cannot express how amazing this professor is. Dr. Carlson was the professor for a few of my English classes, as well as my Maymester in Scotland. He delivers new ideas, a fun learning environment and an endless belief in his students’ goals. He is so supportive, makes every class enjoyable and just makes his students feel like they can accomplish anything. He was my advisor here, and he gave me constant validation, guidance and advice, and he was truly the greatest mentor I could’ve asked for.

Second, there is Dr. Autumn Karen, instructor and co-director of the Quality Enhancement Plan Committee. I’m currently in the process of sending out my first novel to literary agents. I took an independent study with Dr. Karen, and she quite literally changed my life. My first novel was a mess. I had written it in my senior year of high school and hadn’t touched it in years. She worked with me for a semester to craft my novel to perfection. We cut a great amount, revised chapters and her guidance made my novel what it is today. She devoted so much time, effort and dedication to this project, and had so much faith in me. This was the reason I chose HPU. I wanted to have a one-on-one connection with my professors, and I wanted the opportunities to get my book out there. THIS moment was what I needed. I could not have done this without her.”

Most impactful moment at HPU: “My most impactful moment at HPU was my independent study with Dr. Karen. She crafted my novel into what it is today. She spent countless hours reading my novel, marking things, making suggestions and helping to craft it into something I’m so proud of. I could not have done it without her. She is the reason I came to HPU. I wanted an opportunity like this, and this is what I was able to get!”

Advice for underclassmen: “My advice to underclassmen is simple: Start taking your future seriously. Nobody is going to hand you success—you have to work for it. Take advantage of the opportunities around you, build strong habits and be willing to put in the effort even when it’s not easy or convenient. If you want to be successful after graduation, you have to take the reins of your own life. Work hard, stay disciplined and push yourself to grow. The students who succeed are the ones who show up consistently, put in the work and refuse to settle for doing the bare minimum. You need to be able to outwork everyone around you.”
