Name: Jordan Bankston, Class of 2027

Hometown: Miami, Florida

Major: Journalism, minor in Strategic Communication

Internship plans: Jordan will be interning as a News Intern for NBCUniversal at NBC 6 in Miami, Florida. As an intern at NBC 6 South Florida, he will assist with day-to-day newsroom tasks, including researching stories, writing drafts and shadowing reporters. With this being a hands-on experience, Jordan will gain a behind-the-scenes look at how a TV news station operates, while building real-world experience in reporting and storytelling.

How HPU helped you get there:The Nido R. Qubein School of Communication’s staff have always motivated me to join different programs and strive to achieve as much as possible. I remember having a sit-down interview with Dr. Qubein, and he described what it takes to become successful.”

Most impactful mentor at HPU:Dr. Doug Hall, vice president of the Office of Career & Professional Development, is my most impactful mentor because of the way he checks up to see if I’m doing well. Dr. Hall helped me with my career development by not only sending me information on new opportunities but also giving me motivation and weekly check-ins. No matter how busy he was, he always made the time to discuss my career, provide advice and explore different paths to success with me. Every meeting I have with him means a lot.

Most impactful moment at HPU: “My most impactful moment at HPU was when I first made the Dean’s List. I remember my parents finding out before I did, and they were excited! I realized that my hard work is finally paying off, and so is my faith in God!”

What has your internship experience been like and how is it preparing you for your future? “So far, I’ve had five internships. Three of them were for journalism, one of them was for strategic communication and another one was a legal intern. I felt like each one I’ve had so far has prepared me for the future in multiple ways. They taught me workplace etiquette, storytelling and building relationships. These are a few things I will make sure to hold onto as I go into the workforce next year.”

How has HPU’s inspiring environment contributed to your success? “Everyone here is a go-getter, so it inspires people like me to make sure I’m not only in that race, but competing in it as well.”

What are the life skills HPU helped you develop that prepared you for long-term success? “The life skills that HPU helped me develop were time management and making sure that I master each skill before I move on to the next. I appreciate how hands-on the School of Communication is.”

What are the values and virtues HPU’s campus helped you develop that you’ll take with you after graduation? “It cost $0 to be nice to someone and kind to others. You never know where a simple conversation might lead you.”

Advice for underclassmen: Pray and ask God to guide your steps. Simple as that. With God, you win. Jesus is there for you. I’m not a perfect person at all, but Jesus is, and through his Grace and sacrifice, I am saved. So keep praying, because your time is coming soon if it’s God’s will.
