Name: Madison Cooper, Class of 2026

Hometown: Annapolis, Maryland

Major: Event Management

Post-graduation plans: Madison will be starting her career as a Tour Consultant with EF Educational Tours in Denver, Colorado. In this role, Madison will connect with middle and high school teachers to help them plan educational study abroad programs for their students. She will work with educators to design meaningful international travel experiences that align with their curriculum and learning goals.

How HPU helped you get there: “HPU has created an environment that motivates students to strive for excellence and continually push themselves to achieve more. The Event Management program, in particular, has played a significant role in shaping the professional I am today. Dr. Jessica Wiitala, assistant professor of event management and director of entrepreneurship fellows, and Dr. Briana Clark, event and hospitality management chair, challenge their students with high expectations because they genuinely want to see us succeed and reach our full potential.”

Most impactful mentor at HPU: “I would easily have to say both Dr. Wiitala and Dr. Clark, who lead the event management program. They care deeply about their students while also being some of the most challenging professors I have ever had. They have broadened my perspective and consistently pushed me to think more critically and intensely. Because of their guidance, high expectations and continued support over the years, I feel confident and well prepared for the future.”

Most impactful moment at HPU: “One of the most meaningful experiences during my time in the event management program was the opportunity to serve as Event Management Runner Intern with CNN at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Illinois. It was the first time in my professional career that I truly felt that I was making a meaningful impact. Being able to contribute to such a large-scale event while working for a well-respected and globally recognized organization like CNN was an incredible honor.”

How has the Office of Career & Professional Development contributed to your success? “I met with the Office of Career & Professional Development once during my freshman year to review and refine my resume. I was also fortunate to be part of the Media Fellows Colloquium, where the freshman year curriculum focused on building our professional presence early by developing a résumé, cover letter, LinkedIn profile and other essential career materials.”

Advice for underclassmen: “Do not be discouraged by rejection. I applied to post-graduation jobs every week beginning in October and did not receive my offer until February. It can be stressful to see peers begin accepting positions, but it is important to remain persistent. Continue pushing forward, and you will ultimately find the opportunity that is the right fit for you.”
