Major: Interior Design
Post-graduation plans: Skylar will be starting her career as a Design Consultant for RH Interior Design in Greenwich, Connecticut. As a Design Consultant, she will assess the needs of walk-in clients in the RH Gallery, work in collaboration with RH Interior Design to ensure that clients’ design needs are met and their expectations are exceeded. Additionally, Skylar will own all phases of the client experience from initial contact through product delivery.
How HPU helped you get there: “HPU’s design program prepared me by immersing me in the full process of designing for a client from conception to the finished product. Providing feedback pushed me to innovate and exceed expectations through my designs.”
Most impactful mentor at HPU: “My most impactful mentor here at HPU is Professor Brandon Jones, assistant professor of interior design. He is tough but fair, and is always willing to provide help. He genuinely knows what he’s doing and is a fantastic mentor.”
Most impactful moment at HPU: “My most impactful moment thus far at HPU has been the design panel discussion, which featured famous designers such as Libby Langdon, Patti Carpenter and Thom Filicia. Being able to interact with designers at the top of their craft and gain insight was invaluable and inspiring.”
How you used the Office of Career & Professional Development: “I utilized the Office of Career & Professional Development by having meetings about career resources, as well as using LinkedIn and resume tips to better set myself up for the business world.”
How has HPU’s inspiring environment contributed to your success? “HPU’s environment has helped me become comfortable in luxury settings. It has set me up to be able to deal with high-end environments, clientele and impress potential employers.”
What are the life skills HPU helped you develop that prepared you for long-term success? “Some life skills I learned here at HPU were how to deal with luxury clientele, how to negotiate deals and how to market myself to potential employers, clients and more.”
What are the values and virtues HPU’s campus helped you develop that you’ll take with you after graduation? “I learned how to value my time and other people’s hard work. I’ve also gained virtues like courage and compassion.“
Advice for underclassmen: “To be successful after graduation you must be bold, fearless and hungry. Put yourself out there and get you name into discussions. Make your mark of people and the passion will be reciprocated.”
