Name: Ashley Fierro, Class of 2026

Hometown: High Point, North Carolina

Major: Nursing

Post-graduation plans: Ashley will be starting her career as an Emergency Department Registered Nurse at Novant Health in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, after graduation. Her role involves working in a fast-paced emergency department, where she provides patient-centered care to individuals experiencing acute and critical health conditions. This role also involves developing strong clinical judgment, prioritization and assessment skills through a structured nurse residency program that provides mentorship and hands-on experience. The position focuses on delivering safe, compassionate and evidence-based care to a diverse patient population during high-acuity situations.

How HPU helped you get there: “High Point University’s School of Nursing played a major role in preparing me for this next step by providing hands-on clinical experiences, strong academic support and a focus on patient-centered care. Through my clinical rotations in a variety of settings, including high-acuity environments, I was able to build confidence, critical thinking skills and the ability to stay calm under pressure. HPU also helped me grow personally by teaching me the importance of professionalism, communication and resilience, which I will carry with me as I begin my nursing career.”

Most impactful mentor at HPU: “The entire nursing faculty at High Point University has been the most impactful mentorship in my journey. They consistently supported me, challenged me and never gave up on me, always reminding me to stay patient and trust the process even during difficult times. Their encouragement and belief in me helped build my confidence and resilience, shaping me into the nurse I am becoming today.”

Most impactful moment at HPU: “One of the most impactful moments during my time at HPU was balancing nursing school while supporting my son through brain surgery. It was one of the most challenging experiences of my life, but it strengthened my resilience, faith and purpose. That moment reminded me why I chose nursing and inspired me to become a nurse who can support patients and families during their most vulnerable times.”

How you used Career and Professional Development: “I used the Office of Career & Professional Development for support with my resume, cover letter and job preparation. They also guided me in strengthening my LinkedIn profile by improving how I present my experiences and connect with professionals in the field. Their support helped me feel more confident and prepared as I navigated the job application and interview process.”

Advice for underclassmen: “Trust the process and don’t give up, even when it feels overwhelming. Nursing school will push you in ways you don’t expect, but those challenges are what shape you into the nurse you’re meant to become. Take every opportunity to learn, ask questions, grow and most importantly, be patient with yourself because everything will come together in the end.”
