Post-graduation plans: Maeve is launching her career as a Junior Interior Designer with Bignell Watkins Hasser Architects & Interiors in Annapolis, Maryland. This role involves full participation in the interior design process from programming and space planning through construction administration. Responsibilities include developing design concepts, presentations, finish and FF&E selections, detailed drawings and collaborating with project teams, consultants and fabricators.

How HPU helped you get there: “HPU prepared me by providing meaningful opportunities for both personal and professional growth. I have been able to grow and learn through working with industry professionals, working furniture market, and building strong relationships with my professors. The interior design curriculum at High Point has given me the confidence, skills, work ethic and knowledge to succeed in the interior design industry after graduation.”

How did you use the Office of Career & Professional Development? “I used the Office of Career & Professional Development to seek job opportunities at High Point Furniture Market, where I made countless connections with industry professionals and gained real-world experience in the design world.”

What are the life skills HPU helped you develop that prepared you for long-term success? “High Point University gave me the technical and professional skills to achieve my goals and secure my post-grad position.”

Most impactful mentor at HPU: “My most impactful mentor at HPU is Professor Brandon Jones, assistant professor of interior design. Since I had him my freshman year, he has been one of the most impactful professors during my time at HPU. He is extremely knowledgeable and wants all his students to succeed and feel confident in the skills he has taught us. His constant support and encouragement have made a lasting impact on my growth and confidence in myself and my design skills throughout my time at HPU.”

Most impactful moment at HPU: “My most impactful moment at HPU was studying abroad during my Maymester in Osaka, Japan. This trip was truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that allowed me to learn and grow not only as a designer but also as a person. Studying design in Japan was an incredibly eye-opening experience that gave valuable insight into how design is represented and expressed in other cultures.”

Advice for underclassmen: “Be willing to take risks and step outside of your comfort zone, as you may be surprised by what you’re capable of achieving. Take full advantage of every opportunity available to you at HPU, such as study abroad, furniture market and internship opportunities.”
