Name: Gabriel Valenzano, Class of 2026

Hometown: Saint Charles, Illinois

Major: Biochemistry, minor in Physics

Post-graduation plans: Gabriel will be pursuing his Master’s in Biochemistry at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia.

How HPU helped you get there:

“I was able to meet a professor from Virginia Tech because of our guest speakers in the science department. I was already looking at Virginia Tech, but talking to someone from there persuaded me to actually apply.”

Most impactful mentor at HPU:

“By far, the most impactful mentor was Dr. Heather Miller, associate professor of chemistry. Dr. Miller was my research professor for the entirety of my time here at HPU, but was also more of a friend to me than anything. She was supportive, gave me great advice and helped me whenever I needed it. She was one of the main reasons for much of my success and even got me into a summer research program at NC State. Needless to say, while I could keep going, Dr. Miller was an amazing mentor.”

Most impactful moment at HPU:

“My most impactful moments at HPU were probably my times getting published and my senior seminar. I have been published multiple times because of my research, and I think that my name getting out there for the first time was one of the best moments I have ever had. My senior seminar gave me the opportunity to show what I learned throughout my time in research and classes. I was able to present and show my professors how I have grown, and I take a lot of pride in that growth.”

How has HPU’s inspiring environment contributed to your success?

“I think overall HPU’s environment boosted my confidence. HPU’s name also was recognizable to some people I was talking to at graduate programs.”

What are the life skills HPU helped you develop that prepared you for long-term success?

“I learned a lot about how to present, how to perform research and perform at a science-based interview.”

What are the values and virtues HPU’s campus helped you develop that you’ll take with you after graduation?

“HPU helped me be confident, look forward, plan well and collaborate effectively.”

Advice for underclassmen:

“Networking means a lot in every world, even the scientific one. You should be vigilant to take any opportunity that might present itself to you, even if you might not know how to do it. Taking risks and opening yourself to learn something new can be scary, but confidence in your own ability and pushing yourself to keep achieving new things is how you grow.”
