Name: Jack Jaramillo, Class of 2026
Hometown: Coronado, California
Major: Finance and Data Science

Post-graduation plans: Jack will be beginning his career as a Real Estate Professional for Under Armour in Baltimore, Maryland. He will be helping support the strategy behind the company’s retail and corporate real estate portfolio. In addition, he will work on projects involving market analysis, financial modeling, portfolio reporting and real estate decision-making while gaining hands-on experience in how a global brand plans and manages its spaces.

How HPU helped you get there: “The opportunities for student leadership were huge at HPU, and it’s all through my roles and involvement that I’ve gotten to where I am today. Opportunities on campus allowed me to explore my professional passions across 10+ clubs and organizations I was involved in during my four years, as well as find a tight-knit community and really hone in on what I wanted to do post-graduation. With my heavy involvement, I stepped into executive council positions, which were my main talking points of experience throughout interviews.”

What are the life skills HPU helped you develop that prepared you for long-term success? “Being able to communicate clearly and effectively. That’s something I could not do at all before college. My courses ensured that there were plenty of presentations with professors’ feedback that helped work on my communication and presentation skills.”

What are the values and virtues HPU’s campus helped you develop that you’ll take with you after graduation? “To appreciate everything around me. With such a beautiful campus and so many opportunities, my younger self took advantage of the first couple of years. Now that I’ve graduated, I truly appreciate everything HPU did for me, the opportunities that came from it, and the incredible environment I was put in. While it’s hard to replicate such a place as HPU, I now know to look for and appreciate the little things in everything.”

Most impactful mentor at HPU: “Professor Tom James, Professor of the Practice of Finance, was my most impactful mentor. I had the opportunity to do the Finance in France Maymester study abroad trip with him during my freshman year, and that built a strong connection at the start of my college career. He was also the faculty advisor for Panther Real Estate Club, and I took many classes with him. He would always check in with me and see how I was doing. The thing I appreciated most was that he understood failures and mistakes as a lesson. When he teaches his class, he encourages the students to make mistakes or get a problem wrong, but he has it built into the class that when you finally figure out the solution, your grade truly reflects that. He’s an incredible person, and I can’t wait to keep in touch post-grad!”

Most impactful moment at HPU: “I spoke at a lot of Presidential Seminars and Orientations for the Phillips School of Business. I think the most impactful thing to me is hearing students that I’ve talked to in front of a panel say they came to HPU because I shared my experience with them. It means the world to see students who get to come enjoy this great school, and even if I wasn’t solely because of what I said, it warms my heart knowing that a small reason they’re here is because of me.”

Advice for underclassmen: “Whenever you step into your internship role, talk to as many people as you can in your company. I did two to three coffee chats a day, and one of the reasons I had my return offer is because I had people at the company advocating on my behalf to come back. You won’t get that same outcome if you’re not connecting with people, and it also helps you understand your company as a whole, not just within your team. It also makes it so that when you do get the return offer, you have so many more connections that you’re stepping into, instead of starting from scratch at a new company.”
