Name: Norah Cook, Class of 2026

Hometown: Horseheads, New York

Major: Exercise Science

Post-graduation plans: Norah will be attending the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee, to pursue her Doctor of Optometry degree. Throughout her time at HPU, she gained research experience and shadowing opportunities that prepared her for the rigors of optometry school. Norah also started a club focused on the field, further deepening her commitment to the profession before beginning her doctoral studies.

How HPU helped you get there:

“Amazing faculty provided opportunities for me to gain experience with research and helped me to network with people in my intended career field. They also provided me with invaluable letters of recommendation.”

Most impactful mentors at HPU:

“Dr. Roger Vaughan, associate professor of exercise science, for invaluable encouragement and opportunities to start research. Dr. Catherine Heyman, founding dean of the School of Optometry, and Dr. Corina van de Pol, professor of optometry and associate dean of student experience, provided so much guidance through getting shadowing experiences, starting a club, applying for schools and scholarships, and giving me research experience in the field of optometry.”

Advice for underclassmen:

“Get involved with things that you love and are passionate about in college. During interviews, your passion and excitement will show in your answers, and it will be much easier to tie these experiences into the skills applicable to the job/school you are applying for.”
