Post-graduation plans: Sofia will be attending The American University of Florence in Florence, Italy, to pursue a master’s degree in international business management. Drawing on her studies in political science, psychology and Italian studies, she will continue building the global perspective and cross-cultural skills that guided her toward international graduate work. Sofia’s decision to study in Italy follows her junior year abroad in Rome, an experience that deepened her commitment to pursuing opportunities on the international stage.

How HPU helped you get there:

“High Point University helped me grow academically, professionally and personally in ways that prepared me for my next chapter pursuing my master’s degree in Florence, Italy. HPU challenged me to think globally, communicate confidently and step outside of my comfort zone. Through hands-on learning experiences, networking opportunities and mentorship from faculty, I developed the confidence to pursue opportunities internationally and continue building toward my long-term career goals.”

How did you use the Office of Career & Professional Development?

“I used the Office of Career & Professional Development for resume building and application guidance for my graduate programs. Their resources helped me strengthen my professional presence and feel more confident navigating internships, networking opportunities and graduate school preparation. The office played an important role in helping me present myself professionally and prepare for future opportunities.”

What are the life skills HPU helped you develop that prepared you for long-term success?

“HPU helped me develop strong communication, leadership, professionalism, time management and adaptability skills. The university emphasized presenting myself confidently in professional environments while also teaching me how to collaborate effectively with people from different backgrounds. I also learned the importance of discipline, accountability and maintaining a positive mindset when facing challenges, which will continue helping me both academically and professionally.”

What are the values and virtues HPU’s campus helped you develop that you’ll take with you after graduation?

“HPU reinforced the importance of integrity, kindness, leadership, professionalism and gratitude. The campus culture encouraged students to strive for excellence while also treating others with respect and compassion. I will carry those values with me as I continue my education abroad and throughout my future career.”

Most impactful moment at HPU:

“One of the most impactful moments during my time at HPU was studying abroad in Rome during my junior year. That experience pushed me outside of my comfort zone and allowed me to grow both personally and academically while experiencing a new culture and perspective on the world. Living and studying internationally helped me become more independent, adaptable and confident in unfamiliar environments. It also inspired me to continue pursuing international opportunities, which ultimately influenced my decision to pursue my master’s degree in Florence, Italy.”

Most impactful mentor at HPU:

“One of the most impactful mentors during my time at HPU was Dr. Gordon Ballingrud, assistant professor of political science. As both my advisor and professor, Dr. Ballingrud consistently encouraged me to challenge myself academically and professionally while always offering support and guidance along the way. My mentors helped me grow more confident in my abilities, think critically about my future goals and pursue opportunities outside of my comfort zone.”

Advice for underclassmen:

“Take advantage of every opportunity HPU offers. Build relationships with professors and mentors, attend events, gain internship experience, study abroad and step outside of your comfort zone. Success after graduation comes from being proactive, staying disciplined and continuously investing in your personal and professional growth. The more involved and open-minded you are during college, the more prepared you’ll be for the future.”
