Internship plans: Christian Taber, serves as a Corporate Strategy Intern at Visions Federal Credit Union in Endwell, New York. Reporting to the chief governance and strategy officer, he collaborates with C-suite leadership on strategic analysis, planning, communication and integration. Drawing on his experience as a published author and speaker, Christian translates long-term organizational priorities into clear, actionable systems that can be implemented day-to-day across business units. He also supports initiatives in board-management dynamics, government affairs and enterprise project management.
How HPU helped you get there:
“Opportunities for personal and professional growth are abundant at HPU. By putting myself out there, I have been fortunate to build relationships with remarkable professors, mentors and friends who support and challenge me every day. Through our Access to Innovators Program, I have gained valuable insights from corporate executives and prominent speakers, learning from the experiences of those who have walked the walk.”
How did you use the Office of Career & Professional Development?
“Even though I wasn’t immediately looking for a job, I scheduled an appointment with the Office of Career & Professional Development early in my freshman year to hit the ground running. My career advisor introduced me to HPU’s many resources, and connected me with Andy Brehm, director of corporate relations. I shared my long-term career goals with them, and both have been extremely supportive as I build my network and refine my skills. I am grateful for their guidance!”
What has your internship experience been like?
“Working under the guidance and trust of the Visions leadership team has been an incredible privilege, and I am grateful for their feedback and support. They have granted me the opportunity to work on projects that will shape the future of a great organization, helping me refine my skills as a well-rounded professional along the way.”
How has HPU’s inspiring environment contributed to your success?
“Being consistently surrounded by excellence at HPU, whether by mentors, high-achieving peers, or a beautiful physical space, encourages me to match that energy and learn from my surroundings. I take frequent walks around campus just to slow down, take it all in and be grateful for such an amazing place.”
Most impactful mentor at HPU:
“At the recommendation of Dr. Qubein, I enrolled in a Leadership class in my second semester. With longtime dreams of becoming a business executive, I was already excited about the subject, but Dr. David Bergen, Z. Smith Reynolds professor of leadership, raised the bar. While sharing excellent ideas for succeeding in such a role, Dr. Bergen emphasized that being a leader doesn’t require formal authority. He taught me to engage in everyday leadership – acting with intention, building genuine connections and contributing to small wins that add up to something bigger. The course’s final paper was a daunting task – defining my leadership philosophy meant reflecting on years of growth, mentorship and lessons learned, in addition to the valuable course content. Dr. Bergen helped me sort through these ideas, and the journey helped me understand my strengths, opportunities and ways I can make a difference regardless of a title.”
Most impactful moment at HPU:
“Before discovering my passion for business, I was a STEM kid, always eager to learn how things work or make a total mess in the kitchen. I first saw Steve Spangler on The Ellen DeGeneres Show when I was in elementary school, and was captivated by his humorous science demonstrations and endless curiosity. His philosophy inspired me to explore, dream big, be bold, pay attention to detail and exceed expectations – an impact I still feel today. When I was 11 years old, I sent him a letter, and he responded with a signed book. When Steve came to speak at HPU, I brought the book with me, and showed him after the seminar. We instantly hit it off, and have stayed in touch ever since. What a full-circle moment!”
Advice for underclassmen:
“Say yes to new opportunities! Go to the Involvement Fair, sign up for clubs that look interesting, give them a try and keep the ones you feel passionate about. Introduce yourself to your classmates, fellow club members, professors and guest speakers – who knows who may become your new best friend or mentor.”
