In this full-time role, she will represent the school by engaging with prospective families, assisting with events, tours and outreach efforts, and helping create a positive and informative environment for visitors. Shelby will also support the school’s mission by building relationships, promoting community values and serving as a welcoming and encouraging point of connection for families considering Grace Christian School.
How HPU helped you get there:
“High Point University has played a huge role in helping me grow both personally and professionally. I came to HPU as a transfer student from a community college, entering as a junior in college at only 19 years old. This challenged me to adjust quickly to a new environment, higher expectations and a faster academic pace. Through my classes and experiences, I have developed confidence, communication skills and a better understanding of what it takes to succeed in the business world. Being a member of the HPU cheerleading team has also uniquely shaped me by teaching me discipline, teamwork and how to represent something bigger than myself with pride and energy. The hands-on learning environment and supportive community have pushed me to step outside of my comfort zone and take on leadership opportunities. HPU has helped me clarify my goals and given me the tools to achieve them, especially as I work toward owning my own business in the future.”
How did you use the Office of Career & Professional Development?
“I have used the Office of Career & Professional Development at High Point University to help prepare for my future career by taking advantage of resources such as resume building, interview preparation and career coaching. These services helped me better understand how to present myself professionally and feel more confident applying for internships and job opportunities. I also benefited from career fairs and networking events, where I was able to connect with employers and learn more about different career paths in business and marketing.”

“One of the most impactful mentors I have had at High Point University is April Cosner, director of Business Fellows and assistant professor of business communications. I had her for two classes, and during that time she played a meaningful role in my growth by consistently encouraging me to stay focused, work hard and believe in my abilities both inside and outside the classroom. What makes her mentorship so valuable is her genuine investment in my success and her willingness to offer guidance, support and honest feedback whenever I need it. Her encouragement has helped me grow in confidence, professionalism and leadership.”
Most impactful moment at HPU:
“One of the most impactful moments I experienced at High Point University was being selected as one of only six cheerleaders chosen to travel to Oregon to support the men’s basketball team during March Madness. This opportunity was incredibly meaningful because it allowed me to represent HPU on a national stage and be part of such an exciting and high-pressure athletic environment. While we were there, I got to experience the energy of the tournament firsthand, support our team through an unforgettable run and bond with my teammates in a completely new setting. It taught me a lot about pride, teamwork and representing something bigger than myself. That experience is something I will always remember because it showed me the impact of school spirit, dedication and being part of a close-knit team at HPU.”
How has HPU’s inspiring environment contributed to your success?
“High Point University’s inspiring campus environment has played a major role in my success by motivating me to stay focused, confident and intentional about my goals. Being surrounded by a campus that emphasizes professionalism, high expectations and personal growth has pushed me to hold myself to a higher standard in everything I do. As a member of the HPU cheerleading team, I’ve especially felt how the energy and pride on campus translate into discipline, teamwork and leadership in my own life.”
What are the life skills HPU helped you develop that prepared you for long-term success?
“High Point University has helped me develop several life skills that have prepared me for long-term success. I have grown in my ability to communicate effectively, build meaningful relationships and carry myself with confidence in both professional and personal settings. Time management and discipline have also been key skills I’ve strengthened, especially balancing academics with being a member of the HPU cheerleading team. HPU has also taught me the importance of leadership, adaptability and having a strong work ethic. Through different experiences, I have learned how to step outside of my comfort zone, take initiative and handle challenges with a positive mindset.”
What are the values and virtues HPU’s campus helped you develop that you’ll take with you after graduation?
“High Point University has helped me develop strong values and virtues that I will carry with me after graduation. I have learned the importance of integrity, respect and taking responsibility for my actions in both academic and personal settings. HPU has strengthened my sense of gratitude, service and leadership. I have learned how important it is to treat others with kindness, show up with a positive attitude and lead by example in everything I do.”
Advice for underclassmen:
“My biggest advice for underclassmen who want to be successful after graduation is to take advantage of every opportunity early and stay consistent in building both academic and professional skills. Getting involved on campus, whether through clubs, leadership roles or organizations like athletics, helps build confidence, discipline and time management. Those skills carry over into the real world. I would also encourage underclassmen to use resources like career services, networking events and mentorship opportunities instead of waiting until senior year. Building relationships with professors, peers and professionals can open doors you may not expect. Most importantly, staying focused, being willing to step outside of your comfort zone and keeping long-term goals in mind will set you apart and prepare you for success after graduation.”
