Through my coursework, internships, leadership opportunities and connections with industry professionals, I developed the analytical, communication and problem-solving skills that prepared me for a career in buying and merchandising. HPU also encouraged me to build meaningful relationships and pursue opportunities that ultimately helped me secure my position as a Buying Assistant at Ralph Lauren.”
What are the life skills HPU helped you develop that prepared you for long-term success?
“High Point University helped me develop several life skills that will contribute to my long-term success, including leadership, communication, adaptability and professionalism. Through internships, group projects, campus involvement and networking opportunities, I learned how to collaborate with diverse teams, build meaningful relationships and confidently navigate professional environments. Most importantly, HPU taught me the value of taking initiative, staying curious and embracing new opportunities, which are skills I will carry with me throughout my career and life.”
Most impactful mentor at HPU:
“One of the most impactful mentors I had at HPU was Ginger Moore, professor of the practice of marketing and sales. Throughout my time at the university, Ginger was a constant source of encouragement, guidance and support. She challenged me to pursue opportunities outside of my comfort zone, helped me navigate important career decisions and always believed in my potential. Her mentorship played a significant role in my personal and professional growth, and the lessons she taught me about confidence, professionalism and perseverance will stay with me throughout my career.”
Most impactful moment at HPU:
“One of the most impactful moments of my time at High Point University was realizing that some of the greatest opportunities came from stepping outside of the classroom. Through networking events, career fairs, coffee chats with industry professionals and the support of the Office of Career & Professional Development, I learned that building genuine relationships is just as important as earning a degree. Those experiences gave me the confidence to pursue competitive opportunities, connect with mentors and ultimately launch my career. They reinforced the importance of staying curious, taking initiative and never being afraid to introduce myself or ask questions.”
Advice for underclassmen:
“Make it a priority to attend career fairs and seek out every opportunity to network. Keep your LinkedIn profile updated and use it as a tool to build and maintain professional relationships. Finally, always take the extra step to send a handwritten thank-you note after interviews, networking meetings, or meaningful professional conversations. Small gestures like these can leave a lasting impression and help set you apart.”
