Hometown: Bernardsville, New Jersey

Major: Sales

Internship plans: Alexander Johnston, Class of 2027, served as a global broking intern at TP ICAP, a wholesale financial markets brokerage, in New York, New York. Alexander’s day-to-day work included close mentorship from senior leadership, attending team and client meetings, working on meaningful business projects, participating in internal workshops and delivering final capstone presentations.

How HPU helped you get there:

“HPU’s presentation-heavy classes and the Sales Club transformed my speaking skills. In my business and sales courses, I presented constantly, which taught me to organize my ideas, speak with confidence and adapt to questions in real time. The Sales Club gave me even more practice pitching and communicating persuasively in front of peers and professionals. That repetition built the poise I relied on at TP ICAP, where I delivered capstone presentations, spoke in client and team meetings and earned the ‘Poise Under Pressure’ award for staying focused and effective in a fast-paced environment.”

How did you use the Office of Career & Professional Development?:

“Yes, I used the Office of Career & Professional Development for my LinkedIn profile and resume.”

Most impactful mentor at HPU:

“My most impactful mentors were Ginger Moore, professor of the practice of marketing and sales, and Larry Quinn, professor of the practice of sales. They have so much love for their students and want to see them thrive in the real world!”

Did your interview process include a dining component?:

“Yes. I had a fancy dinner at Wolfgang’s, and the employer dinner at 1924 PRIME years ago helped me understand proper table etiquette.”

What life skills did HPU help you develop?:

“HPU taught me coachability and leadership. Professors and mentors gave me direct, honest feedback on my presentations and sales approach, and I learned to welcome it, apply it quickly and improve each time. I learned to lead by example, hold myself accountable and help teammates grow. At TP ICAP, that mindset helped me learn quickly from senior brokers and stay composed under pressure.”

What values and virtues will you take with you?:

“I earned a certificate in coachability and emotional intelligence by learning directly from real-life CEOs and professionals. Hearing how successful leaders handle feedback, read people and stay humble taught me to stay open to coaching, manage my emotions under pressure and build genuine relationships. I’ll carry those values of humility, self-awareness and empathy with me after graduation.”

Advice for underclassmen:

“It all starts before graduation, so make sure there is a healthy balance, because college is what you make of it.”
