Academic Violations

Initial Meeting and Case Handling: If a student is suspected of an academic violation of the University Honor Code, the instructor will meet with you to discuss the charges. After this conference, if the instructor concludes that the charges have merit, they may choose to either adjudicate the case directly, refer the case to the University Honor Court through the Office of Community Standards, or allow you to choose between these options. Before this meeting, the instructor will check your file to see if prior sanctions for Honor Code violations exist. If prior sanctions are present, the case may be referred directly to the University Honor Court.

Process of Adjudication:

  1. The instructor submits the violation. The Office of Community Standards checks for previous sanctions and provides a blank form resolution to the professor.
  2. The professor and student discuss the issue. If the student denies deny responsibility, the case goes directly to the Honor Court. If it’s a first offense and the student accepts responsibility, the instructor may adjudicate, refer to the Honor Court, or allow the student to choose.
  3. If prior sanctions exist or the instructor believes more severe penalties are necessary, the case is referred to the Honor Court.
  4. The Honor Court handles scheduling and procedures as delineated in the conduct guidelines.

Sanctions:

  • First Infraction: Minimum penalty is a grade of zero on the assignment; maximum is an F in the course. An Honor Code Incident Report is filed.
  • Second Infraction: Minimum penalty is a grade of FH; maximum is suspension for the semester. Additional sanctions, such as community service, may be imposed. This FH is noted on a transcript.
  • Third Infraction: Minimum penalty is a grade of FH for the course and suspension for the semester; maximum is expulsion. Community service or other sanctions may be applied.
  • Additional Infractions: Will result in a grade of FH for the course and suspension or expulsion.

Non-Academic Violations

Handling of Cases: For non-academic violations of the University Honor Code, Office of Community Standards may adjudicate or assign the case to the Honor Court. Typically, if prior sanctions exist, the case is assigned directly to the Honor Court.

Sanctions: The sanctions for non-academic violations mirror those for violations of the University Code of Conduct.
