University Hearing Board Process

After the initial meeting with the Office of Community Standards, a student has the right to accept the policy violation and sanctions assigned by the Office of Community Standards or opt for a hearing through the High Point University Conduct Board. There are several different types of hearing options for students depending on the alleged policy violation:

University Honor Board

A University Honor Board is convened for the purpose of adjudicating alleged violations of the Honor Code and is usually comprised of:

  • 1 Student Hearing Chair
  • 2 Student Justices
  • 2 Faculty Justices
  • 1 Student Advisor
  • 1 Student Hearing Officer

Each Justice has a voice and vote in the decision-making process with the exception of the hearing chair who will only vote in the case of a tie. The SGA Attorney General, or an appropriate designee, will serve as the Hearing Officer.

University Conduct Board

A University Conduct Board is convened for the purpose of adjudicating alleged violations of the Code of Conduct, and may be comprised of:

  • 1 Student Hearing Chair
  • 2 Student Justices
  • 2 Faculty Justices
  • 1 Student Advisor
  • 1 Student Hearing Officer

University Sanction Only Hearing

The University Conduct Board may serve as a Sanctions Only Board when the student has accepted responsibility for the policy violation, but challenge the sanctions issued. In these instances, the board may consist of:

  • 1 Student Hearing Chair
  • 1 Student Justice
  • 1 Faculty Justice
  • 1 Student Advisor

Each Justice has a voice and vote in the decision-making process with the exception of the hearing chair who will only vote in the case of a tie.

University Hearing Board Tips and Expectations

Below are Tips and Expectations for you to be best prepared for your Conduct or Honor Hearings:

  1. Take your Hearing Seriously: This is a formal university proceeding. We strongly suggest meeting with a Hearing Process Advisor prior to your hearing.
  2. Dress Appropriately: Business casual is strongly suggested.
  3. Arrive on Time: If a student has not arrived for their UCB/UHB hearing at the time designated in their hearing notification letter, the hearing will proceed without the student. Hearings will not be rescheduled.
  4. Be Honest: While in a hearing all parties are expected to be truthful to the best of their knowledge.
  5. Come Prepared: You are your best defense. Proper pre-planning prevents poor presentations. A student is responsible for preparing their opening statement, presentation of facts, and a closing statement. Again, we strongly suggest meeting with a Hearing Process Advisor prior to a hearing.
  6. Ask Questions: If a student has questions regarding the process and their rights/role, please contact the Office of Community Standards representative as soon as possible to get them answered. This means before, during, and after your hearing.
  7. Witnesses: A student may not bring “character witnesses”. Any witnesses should have pertinent information regarding the incident in question. Witnesses are not allowed in Sanctions Only Hearings. Students who wish to call witnesses during their hearing must notify the Office of Community Standards no less than three (3) days in advance of their scheduled hearing.
  8. No electronic devices are allowed to be used in a hearing. Only devices approved by the Office of Community Standards and/or the Office of Accessibility Resources may be used. In cases where evidence is in electronic formats, the Office of Community Standards may present during the hearing.
  9. Failure to attend. Students who fail to attend their board hearing will lose their right to appeal the decision of the hearing board.
