Coaching Background: Todd Murphy, In his 5th year for HPU Club Baseball which plays in the NCBA, National Club Baseball League in Division II, is looking to continue the upward success the program has set in the past 4 years. In Murphy’s first year as head coach, spring of 2015-2016, he took the Panthers to a 12-10 overall record and placed third in the conference with a 6-6 record. With a talent pool of 35-40 players including 15 freshmen that came out in the fall of 2016, the team went 9-3 in the fall development season and showcased a great year in the spring of 2017 with a 16-4 overall record and winning the Panthers first ever conference championship with a conference record of 9-2. Winning the conference title also advanced the HPU Club Baseball team to it’s first ever playoff appearance which was held in Columbus, Georgia. The Panthers played their way to a 2nd conference championship and a 2nd trip to Georgia where they were 1st runner up in Regional Playoffs falling 1 game short reaching the Div. II World series in Pittsburg, Kansas. Murphy has had 2 players named to the NCBA All-American tea, Chad Thomas (OF) and Logan Simmons
(RP).
Before High Point University, Murphy coached 9 seasons of high school varsity sports at Northwest Guilford High School which is in the Piedmont Triad 4A Conference. Murphy started coaching at Northwest, spring of 2006. While at Northwest, Murphy coached baseball for 7 seasons; JV coach his first 2 seasons with combined regular season record of 40-0 and 2 time Greensboro Palomino Easter JV Tournament Champions. He was the Varsity 1st assistant coach from 2006-2012. Murphy coached outfielders, infield and base running. Varsity accomplishments; 4 regular season conference championships, 3 conference tournament championships, 2008 Crystal Coast Easter Classic Champions, Havelock, NC, 3 times sweet 16 playoffs, 1 Elite 8 playoff appearance – 2007 and (3) 20 win seasons.
In addition to coaching baseball at NW Guilford High school, Murphy coached travel showcase baseball for the Carolina Canes based out of Kernersville, NC. With his brother Derek Murphy who managed 4 teams and is now on the High Point University Softball coaching staff.
Murphy also coached High School Varsity Football for Northwest Guilford High for 9 seasons as the linebackers coach and 1 season as wide receivers coach. He facilitated the weight room, strength and conditioning for 2 seasons from 2009-2011 and won the team’s first 2 (back to back) out of four conference titles while making it to the semi-finals in 2012.
Semi-Pro: Murphy played 2 seasons (1988-1990) of Semi-Pro baseball for the Winston-Salem Pond Giants in the Carolina League under legendary Coach Nelson Petree. Primary position was pitcher and third base; secondary position was left field. Coach Petree has since been inducted in the Winston-Salem Baseball Hall of Fame.
Education/Personal: A graduate of East Forsyth High School, Kernersville, NC where he lettered in 3 sports; baseball, football, and wrestling. Murphy earned all-conference awards in baseball and football. In baseball, primary position was pitcher and 3rd base; secondary position was 2nd base and out field.
Murphy graduated college from Guilford Technical Community College where he obtained an Associates Degree in Architectural Technology in Applied Science in 1990. He worked as a certified personal trainer and nutrition advisor for 10 years, competed as a bodybuilder and power lifter for 12 years from 1991-2003.
Current Job: Works full time as a Project Manager and Civil Engineering Technician.
Hobbies: Murphy says “I love anything sports related, fishing & boating along the NC Coast , I consider coaching one of my favorite things to do! I have a great relationship with the players and love working with them. I try to be a positive role model and love helping them with life skills as needed. I feel I earn the players trust and respect and can talk to them about many issues life may bring to them as a young adult. Watching a player develop and grow into a fine young man is very self gratifying and when we step on that field, I feel very honored and proud to be a coach!
