Dr. Ricardo Walter serves as a Professor of Dental Medicine, specializing in Operative and Cosmetic Dentistry, and as Director of Clinical Quality Improvement at the Workman School of Dental Medicine. In his role at High Point University, he is dedicated to advancing clinical excellence, enhancing patient care outcomes, and integrating quality improvement initiatives into dental education and practice. He also serves as Clinical Director of HPU Health Hillandale, where he supports the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered care.
Dr. Walter earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) from the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina in Florianópolis, Brazil, and his Master of Science in Operative Dentistry from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Adams School of Dentistry. After graduating from dental school in 1999, he practiced dentistry in Brazil before joining the Operative Dentistry graduate program at UNC in 2002, where he completed his MS degree in 2005 and remained on faculty until 2011. He then joined the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, where he taught from 2011 to 2014, before returning to UNC. There, he served in multiple leadership roles, including Group Practice Leader and Associate Dean for Clinical Education. In 2023, he joined High Point University’s Workman School of Dental Medicine and HPU Health.
Dr. Walter is the co-editor of Sturdevant’s Art and Science of Operative Dentistry, a leading textbook in restorative dentistry, and has authored more than 40 peer-reviewed publications focused on restorative materials and clinical techniques, including bonding systems and tooth-colored restorative materials. He also serves as Associate Editor for clinical research for the Journal of the Academy of Operative Dentistry. Over his career in academia, Dr. Walter has educated approximately 2,000 dentists while maintaining an active clinical practice.
Through his leadership in clinical quality improvement and dental education, Dr. Walter is committed to advancing evidence-based dentistry, mentoring future clinicians, and improving patient outcomes through innovation and excellence in care.
