Dr. Andrew Tzavaras explores the interaction between politics, economics, religion, and warfare in the late medieval and early modern Mediterranean. He holds a BA and MA from High Point University and a DPhil (PhD) in History from the University of Oxford. He has published a chapter regarding Medici crusades during the mid-sixteenth century: ‘Cosimo’s Crusades 1559-1563: Tuscany, the Military Order of Santo Stefano, and the Nature of Early Modern Crusades’, in Magnus Ressel, ed. Crusading Ideas and Fear of the Turks in Late Medieval and Early Modern Europe. (Toulouse: PUM Presses, 2021), 165-180 and an article on European perceptions of Ottoman naval power: “Two Perceptions of Süleyman’s ‘Magnificent’ Navy during the Later Italian Wars” in War & Society Volume 42 Issue 2 (May, 2023), pp. 123-139. His teaching expertise ranges from the bronze age Mediterranean to the modern Middle East.
