John Carlisle, Assistant Professor of Marketing, joined the Earl N. Phillips School of Business as an adjunct faculty member in the Fall of 2023, transitioning shortly thereafter to full-time faculty in the Fall of 2024. At High Point University, he has taught undergraduate classes in Principles of Marketing and Personal Selling, Negotiations, and International Marketing.
Professor Carlisle’s path to academia was anything but traditional. A native of Akron, Ohio, he completed a dual B.S. in Industrial Management and Economics at Carnegie Mellon University. After his graduation, he was commissioned as an Intelligence Officer in the U.S. Army. For more than a decade, Professor Carlisle served with distinction in the intelligence field, including staff and leadership positions in the elite 75th Ranger Regiment and with Special Mission Units. He led cross-functional intelligence and Special Operations teams in seven foreign countries before separating from military service.
He completed a dual master’s program at the W.P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University and the Thunderbird School of Global Management, simultaneously earning both his MBA and MIM (Master of International Management). Following graduation, he moved to Los Angeles, CA, and began a career in marketing and advertising.
Starting with the Everbridge company, and for the next 15 years Professor Carlisle worked in the marketing and advertising fields as a client-side marketer, advertising agency executive, and entrepreneur. The breadth of his clients included global B2C and B2B companies in consumer package goods (CPG); technology and security; financial services; entertainment and gaming; government and non-profit; and medical and health care industries. Professor Carlisle’s advertising teams were often recognized for being the best strategic thinking in marketing – successful at solving business challenges, connecting with audiences, and delivering results. His advertising awards include a Gold Effie, Silver Effie, Bronze Effie, London International Award, and AAAA/Jay Chiat Award.
Currently residing in Winston-Salem, NC, with his wife and two sons, Professor Carlisle draws upon his experience living and working in five foreign countries to bring a global perspective to his teaching. He maintains his passion for international travel and cultural exploration, continuing to seek opportunities for global engagement both inside and outside the classroom.
