Cale Fahrenholtz, PhD is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Basic Pharmaceutical Sciences at High Point University’s Fred Wilson School of Pharmacy with a background in pharmacology, cancer biology, and nanoscience. Since joining HPU in 2019, his teaching duties focus on pharmacology and oncology. Passionate about inspiring curiosity, Cale integrates real-world challenges into the classroom to prepare students for dynamic careers in pharmacy and biomedical research. In addition to his teaching duties, Cale leads an oncology research program involving pharmacy and undergraduate student research assistants.
Cancer is a highly heterogeneous disease, making it challenging to treat effectively, even under optimal conditions. Standard therapies often fail to produce lasting responses, as many cancers either do not respond initially or develop resistance over time, leading to continued progression and life-threatening outcomes. The research in Dr. Fahrenholtz’s laboratory focuses on uncovering the genetic and molecular mechanisms underlying treatment-resistant and difficult-to-treat cancers. By understanding these mechanisms, the lab aims to develop innovative strategies for patient stratification and targeted therapies, particularly through the use of rationally designed nanomedicines and small molecules. Current projects include repurposing anti-malarial drugs to treat malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors and exploring silver nanoparticles as a means to both treat and prevent the malignant transformation of plexiform neurofibroma.
