High Point University is starting off the new year in the new semester by giving back. That's not a new story for High Point University.

The university has long established a commitment to serving others both in the local community and beyond.

As the volunteers at High Point University gathered to show the local community extra love and support today, it's a reflection on how HPU makes Martin Luther King Jr. Day a day on, not off.

All across campus and in the community, service projects were carried out by hundreds of students, faculty, and staff.

Volunteers worked on projects like meal packaging, painting local schools, health screenings, and so much more.

Here at High Point University, we really take the time to really focus on the needs of the community, events that may look at food disparity in the community, also looking at student needs as far as at different elementary schools, and really focusing on our educators as well.

In the Slain Student Center, hundreds of students came together to package meals. Over 80,000 meals were packaged in an effort to fight food insecurity.

As we see the needs in our community and try to solve solutions to them, it just gives us a fulfilling feel as students and gives us what we need to be successful and to be involved in our community, not only while we're here, but once we graduate as well.

As you can see here, we have a couple hundred students. It's at 9:00 a.m. in the morning, and they're here willing to serve and two more sessions after this. So, it's cool to see people get out of bed on a day that we don't have classes, but they can still be on even though we have a day off.

Today, a bunch of us are here to just remodel the classrooms and make them look all nice for the students that are coming back tomorrow. That's just mainly like our role to be able to just give back and like help people that are in need.

Most of our students when they come tomorrow to school, I bet none of them knew that their classrooms were going to be painted. So, for them to come into a new painted classroom, that's also going to be kind of like, hey, I'm going to do my best because the school looks beautiful.

Service efforts have surpassed last year's total of 2,000 hours.

These hours are a part of the over 500,000 service hours annually contributed by the HPU family.
