Foundations in Integrated Medical Physiology5400The focus of this laboratory-based course will be on the integrated function of organ systems and their role in regulating homeostasis within the body. Content coverage will take place primarily through active learning, clinical case studies, and laboratory exercises in the Center for Medical Simulation.
Medicinal Chemistry in Biological Concepts5500This course covers foundational concepts for understanding the human body at a bio-molecular level and will be taught from an interdisciplinary viewpoint in biochemistry and medicinal chemistry merged with an additional biomedical science discipline.
Enhanced EMT Training5200This course is intended for student on the clinical track by instructing students to the level of Emergency Medical Technician-Basic (EMT-B) and will be supplemented by correlated content with the Human Anatomy, Human Physiology, and Histology courses.
Techniques in Biomedical Sciences5300This course is intended for students on a research or internship track (or for students who are already EMT certified, but within the clinical track) and will introduce student to the most common techniques used in biomedical research and clinical diagnosis. Students will gain certifications in HPU CITI laboratory training.
Statistics for Evidence Based Practice in the Health Sciences5000This course will equip students with the biostatistical skills necessary for analyzing data and understanding the medical literature.
Applied Gross Anatomy5600This laboratory-based course includes cadaveric dissection and provides an anatomical framework for the understanding of form and function within the human body. Students will develop knowledge about anatomical relationships with structure and function and then apply them to problems of dysfunction that are relevant to clinical practice, specifically in EMT work or forensic medicine.
Medicinal Pharmacology6000This course will provide students with an in-depth understanding of pharmacological principles as well as the ability to use and apply this information. Topics covered will include pharmacokinetic principles, receptor theory and drug-receptor interactions; non-receptor targets, and common medications that may be encountered in a clinical or research setting. Emphasis on mechanism of action as related to Human Physiology will be targeted.
Pathology with Histology6100This course will cover the initiation, progression, and outcome (pathogenesis) of disease, including injury, inflammation, and tumorigenesis. The course will also address laboratory medicine detection of cellular dysfunction through microanatomy analysis, tissued processing, and staining techniques.
EMT Clinicals5250This course is intended for students on the clinical track and will explore the clinical experiences students will acquire while concurrently practicing as EMTs. Students will be encouraged to explore through small group discussions of their clinical experiences the ways in which coursework on human anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry inform their understanding of patient outcomes.
Research Design in Biomedical Sciences5350This course is intended for students on the research development or internship track and will focus on experimental writing, design, and implementation of ideas. Students will write the introduction and methods for their intended capstone question, draft a poster template, and generate an IRB, animal protocol, or any other proposal needed ahead of their research or internship experience.
Healthcare Practice and Professional Development I6200This course will consist of seminars, workshops, and small group discussions led by faculty and other healthcare professionals to foster students’ self-development, a strong sense of professional identity, and cultural competence. A focus in ethics will be provided.
Standardized Exam Preparation I and II5001 5002This two-semester workshop will help students acquire the logical reasoning and problem-solving skills required on standardized exams such as theMCAT, GRE, and DAT. Students will be advised according to the standardized exam that is relevant to their preferred health profession.
Analysis and Critique of Literature in the Biomedical Sciences6300The focus of this Special Topics Course will vary, depending on the expertise of faculty teaching it each semester. Overall, the course will provide an in-depth exploration of a particular topic relevant to human health and/or disease (e.g., immunology, cancer biology, clinical neuroscience). Content coverage will take place through an exploration and discussion of the primary scientific literature.
Capstone Project Clinical Experience Research Development Internship6400 6401 6402The backbone of the inquiry-based capstone project is a 10-week training event based in experiential learning to train students in 1) conducting independent research on a medically relevant topic, 2) immerse students in medically related service learning in provided clinical sites, or to engage in an internship.
