HIGH POINT, N.C., Sept. 22, 2014 – High Point University will host more than 4,000 visitors to campus as a part of this fall’s “Family Weekend” – ensuring an extra economic boost to the city of High Point and the greater Triad area. The event will be held Sept. 26-28 and will offer academic panels, entertainment, festivities and more to members of the HPU family.
“With deep roots in our community, HPU has a substantial economic impact on High Point in addition to the tremendous role that faculty and students play in nearly every aspect of our community,” says Tim Mabe, president and CEO of the High Point Convention and Visitors Bureau (HPCVB). “Clearly, we as a city are most blessed for the many events High Point University holds throughout the year.”
With a record number of 4,400 undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in HPU this year, a substantial economic impact can be expected as families of students flock to the Triad and enjoy local restaurants, hotels and retail establishments. The HPCVB estimates the economic impact of last year’s fall Family Weekend was $1,967,569.
The weekend of events will include a variety of activities, including a session where HPU President Dr. Nido Qubein will give an overview and update of the growth and progression of the university; a 5K Family Fun Run that navigates through the HPU campus; a choral concert, fireworks, various religious services and much more. Many other events planned for the weekend can be found at the HPU Family Weekend page on the university website.
HPU’s Family Weekend is just one of many events that brings visitors to the city of High Point each year, including the recent Open House event on Sept. 20 that attracted more than 500 prospective students and their families from more than 20 states. During the 2013-14 school year, HPU welcomed more than 80,000 visitors to campus through its numerous activities, including admissions, athletic, cultural, family and community events, including plays, concerts, Big South Conference tournaments, prospective student tours, Alumni and Family Weekends and more.
