National Business Etiquette Week 2015

June 4-10, 2015 is National Business Etiquette Week! This is a week to recognize the need for proper business etiquette and business intelligence necessary to compete in the growing global marketplace.

Check out some important business etiquette tips presented by The Office of Career and Internship Services:

Dressing For Success

When preparing for your interview, there are a few key things both men and women need to remember. Make sure your clothing fits well and is clean. Have Campus Concierge send your outfit out for dry cleaning several days before your interview. Carefully inspect your clothes for price tags, dangling threads, etc. Be sure to use perfume and cologne sparingly.

  • Keep jewelry to a minimum.

Men:

  • Wear a solid color suit (navy, dark grey or black).
  • Wear a long sleeve shirt that coordinates well with your suit.
  • Wear a conservative tie (avoid bright colors or cartoon ties).
  • Wear dark, mid-calf length socks and a belt that matches your shoes.

Email Etiquette

  • Make sure your business emails always include a courteous introduction and closing.
  • Make sure your emails always include a detailed subject line.
  • Refrain from using multiple color fonts in one email.
  • When sending large attachments, compress the files before sending.
  • Spell check all emails before sending.

Dining Skills

1924 PRIME exemplifies the holistic, values-based education that High Point University provides to students. 1924 PrimeWhile operating as a first-class restaurant, 1924 PRIME also serves as a learning lab, exposing students to proper social and dining etiquette and promoting many of the values that High Point University seeks to model: Service, Generosity and Fellowship.

When dining with a potential employer remember the following:

  • Arrive 20 minutes early to allow time to “freshen up” in the restroom.
  • As the employer will be paying for your meal, order from the mid-priced entrees on the menu.
  • Let the interviewer guide the discussion. Remember that the dinner interview will be a softer sell than the preliminary interview.
  • Review formal dining etiquette before the interview if you are nervous.
