HPU graduates are leading prestigious career paths around the world at Fortune 500 companies, international service programs, public school systems, top-tier law, medical and graduate school programs, and many other esteemed organizations thanks to their journey at HPU. Here’s a glimpse of one extraordinary graduate from the Class of 2022:
Name: Brooke McCarthy
Hometown: Winchester, Massachusetts
Major: Elementary education
Post-graduation plans: McCarthy joins Everett Public Schools as a fourth-grade general education classroom teacher in Everett, Massachusetts. In her role, she will also teach social studies and math to students with social and cognitive disabilities.
How HPU helped you get there: “I was able to have four years of classroom experience thanks to the opportunities HPU provides for all education majors. Between my full-time student teaching placement my senior year, all the education courses and support from the Stout School of Education professors, I can say my dream to be a classroom teacher is a reality straight out of college. I used the Office of Career and Professional Development for resume support, as education majors’ resumes should look different than a standard resume. I also attended a professional development event at 1924 PRIME, which was hosted by their office.”
Most impactful mentor at HPU: “My most impactful mentor at HPU was my academic advisor, Dr. Shirley Disseler. She was a friendly face on campus that I could go to whenever I needed something. I was able to stop in her office and get the support and advice I needed at all times of the day. In my final months at HPU, she helped me with my resume and preparing to transfer my North Carolina teaching license to a Massachusetts teaching license.”
Most impactful moment at HPU: “The most impactful moment for me at HPU was graduation—every aspect, from Clark the eagle flying over us to walking across the stage. It was the perfect way to wrap up the best four years of my life. It was a day I will always remember and one that made me realize HPU will always be my home even though I won’t be living there anymore.”
How has HPU’s inspiring environment contributed to your success? “Every detail that Dr. Nido Qubein and his team put onto our campus really does contribute to every student’s success. Having academic buildings and dorms that you want to be in allows you to have a nice place to study and to be successful.”
What are the life skills HPU helped you develop that prepared you for long-term success? “I learned who I was as a person and grew more confident. When I went into the interview for my job, I felt prepared because of the life skills and educational skills that I had learned for four years at HPU.”
Advice for underclassmen: “Apply, apply, apply. You are not always going to get the first job you apply to and sometimes that can be discouraging—it was for me. As long as you keep applying, the next day you could have a job.”
